Eager farm worker looking for work

Maybe try a couple of milkings over the weekends you would have more experience then to get a full time job. :)

I have thought this.

But working 7 days a week I won’t get to see my wife and 2 kids (both under 2)
Financially it would be great with the extra income. And I know farming isn’t a 9-5 job.

I’m aware of the work involved and that I lack experience I’m very open with this. I’m also a fast learner who works hard.
I just need an In so I can provide for my family and earn enough to bring in enough to help support us. I’m no hindrance I can be an asset.

Have a look at 4xtrahands or the LKL website.

Contact a local agricultural society and the County NFU with your details. They sometimes send out emails of people looking for work/experience in this area.

Would a sideways move work for you? Like agricultural bank manager or agricultural accountant? Better paid and you should still get out and about a fair bit. Our accountant is on farm most days of the week and is heavily involved in the local farming community.

Take some holiday or unpaid leave go and work with a block calver at the height of calving for a few weeks or a month. If you can handle the pressure you’ll have something worthy to put on your cv

The good thing about morning milking is that if you can find somewhere that isn't too long a commute then you can still be home by 9am for a day with family.

It's a shame the midlands doesn't have the highest concentration of dairy farms. I don't think you'd struggle to find work down here in Devon.

I have several friends in your position, where they are stuck in office jobs that they don't enjoy. The trouble is that with a complete career change you still have to start at the bottom with the school leavers and on a school leavers salary and this is not possible when you have family/mortgage. If you are switched on and hard working then you should be able to raise through the ranks quicker than some of the younger guys but it's still going to be hard initially.

^ good advice, early Sunday morning is the only time you'll travel far on the M42 in a hurry, get a Sunday morning job on a farm which is likely to have a full time vacancy.
The farm I mentioned above is also looking for a night milker to train

This would be an option but can’t seem to get anyone’s attention other than the initial to give me work.

*scratches head

I’m sorry but I find you somewhat at odds, you say that your eager to get to work but won’t work weekends. trust me there is plenty of weekend milking jobs out there, dairy farming is generally 12 on 2 off, so if you started doing every other weekend you would soon gain some experience and then you would understand what the hours are like and so would your family.

Part of the job will not be seeing your kids at some point. Unfortunately that’s how the job is. And with little experience you have more to prove than others
