Got a weg 3kw 1ph motor burnt out. Weg don't make this model anymore. Is it economic to rewind them? Can get a new TEC motor for about £260 +vat. Are tec motors as good quality as weg or what other makes is worth looking at? This is powering a milking parlour vacuum pump so needs to be up to the job.

The last motor we had rewind was more money than that & it was a smaller motor, but it was out of a cut off saw & could not get any thing like it to fit in side the housing , all getting it sorted at the moment may well take some time , i think your new motor is not expensive.

only ever got 1 motor rebuilt by team rewinds it was a petty big motor around 30Kw I think they did a crap job doing it and it burnt out in a couple of weeks due to lack of some sort of insulation and we had to buy a new one plus wait for the delivery of it from Germany that took a week. ---------lesson learned

at that time and it was around 10 years ago I think rewinding them was only viable cost wise over certain size that may have been round 3 to 5KW so on that basis you may be right on the edge , personally i would probably would buy new and just buy a good a quality cast iron motor as you can find with an acceptable lead time
Try quantum controls they do ABB and WEG they are or where in Prudhoe and maybe Birtly also now

I remember when our milking pump motor burnt out the electrician said it would be a waste of time rewinding and the best motor to get was crompton or brooks , this was 1990 so I don't know if these motors are still available
The motor worked perfect until 2000 when we finished milking then it was standing for a number of years until a local semi retired carpenter had it to drive his saw bench

May i ask how ur milking without the milk pump currently? Would it not be a case of i need a new motor right now to finish the milking

LOL, new motor fitted yesterday. Dairy fitters had a 2nd hand one to keep us going. Looking at options to either fix old one or buy an other. 2 motors and 2 vacuum pumps fitted, we can milk with one but its not keen to wash out with only one pump.

Apart from weight whats the advantages of cast iron over aluminium casings.

I was told mainly for heat dissipation the alloy ones rely much more on the fan they heat up quick and can cool down quick if the fan or the motor flights are not blocked but a cast iron one just has more bulk so takes longer to heat up .
I guess it depends a bit on how the motor works , as in on/off constantly or is likely to get the fan filled with debris etc. and also the windings that dictate the RPM , obviously the more speed the better the fan can work.
to be fair some of the motors we where using at the time were convertor controlled so could run very slow so heat build up was a pretty big issue , perhaps in faster running pump in cool environment its maybe not an issue that may concern you.
It would seem that generally most motors seem to be alloy these days and cast iron ones seem more rare but they are still available

Thanks for the replies, I'll call Quantum controls in the morning. Its a 1500rpm 4 pole motor and it running at the same speed in a clean room so I don't think heat is an issue.

Last rewind here cost considerably more than an identical new replacement, haven’t bothered since.
Jimmy Woods are Tec dealers, priced as well as anyone else online.

Some of these motors that appear to be identical & look cheap are far east shite.
Had one took fire. Supplier first said I was overloading it It was running at half rated capacity
When I returned it the lad on the counter said, not another one !

Still available as Brook Crompton, all made abroad these days, not made in Yorkshire anymore unfortunately.

I have two second hand ones if you are interested. I fitted two new ones with variable speed controller. These two came with pumps from a second hand parlour. history unknown but ran fine for the few months we used them, but variable speed controller needed two identical motors
