Electric operated PTO problem

Went out today to finish off the top dressing with the compact tractor on some of the more,,, challenging land.

Into the field, and positioned and hit the PTO rocker switch and build the revs ready to head off... Nope, no PTO drive!

I had a little hiccup yesterday where the PTO failed to engage but then it kicked in and went OK afterwards.

Checked the switch, cables and connectors, checked the fuse box, checked no safety cut-outs stopping it from starting, All seemed OK.

I am wondering if there is a solenoid or relay gone, but not had any experience of an electric pto problem before...

Can anyone offer any suggestions to look at please? My auto sparky is unavailable at the moment... :-(

If it's new holland it's likely alternator also seen one with the speed selector in neutral :banghead:

I can believe that... The manner in which the electricals are all controlled by a CPU which is then placed in a less than logical location bemuses me! The autoelectrician was telling me last year about a few tractors he has worked on. JD was a particular favourite.

You could Check the stop buttons on the mudgard by pass them with a little bit of wire one at a time and you find one could be faulty then replace I had similar problem

Hijacking the thread..... I have a JD6630 with a PTO that is playing up too... Is there a load sensors or something in the drive system? Pull the PTO switch up and it will sometimes choose not to engage, particularly at low revs, just flashes the PTO light on the dash.. If Iplay with the throttle and try the switch a few times eventually the drive engages. What is more annoying is when it chooses to disengage whilst fert spreading without any audible warning, did it once yesterday and once today... could do half the field without the discs spinning if I wasn't switched on to it! Have had it drop out turning hay and power harrowing too so seems to occur regardless of which PTO speed is selected. Any ideas?

Thanks Joe. It could well be something like that. I will try pressing the external buttons with the PTO running and see if that replicates the same effect of stopping the PTO and flashing the PTO light on the dash. The only thing that makes me question that being the issue is the PTO stopping mid work is still rare but the PTO failing to start is really common. If it was a external swtich fault I would have though it would be as likely to stop during work as be reluctant to start.
