Second year running I've had poor bushel weights with this variety, last year I can understand due to lack of water, but I thought this year would be better, sampled at 46-47kg, anyone else finding similar?

Yes. First year for us growing spring oats. The millers said they preferred Elyann so that’s what we grew. Got what I thought was a good yield ....until phone call yesterday saying 40kg bushel weight! Had got 3 loads sold for milling at £145/t ....they’re feed now.

Can you polish them up to a level they will take?

Not Elyann but Canyon here. Only grown spring oats for the last 3 years. 2017 I did nearly 7t/ha of 55kg/hl. Last year due to drought I did 4.5t/ha of 44kg/hl.
This year I thought they would be ok. Yielded around 6t/ha but only 48kg/hl.

Our spring oats bushel weight in the 30s
Been getting lower every year since we started growing them.
We had a spring oat variety trial on our farm for 3 years. Never saw anything that looked outstanding.
Going to plant them once more to see if I can get bushel weight in the 20s then call it a day

You lot are probably planting far too much seed.
If you grow next year try using half your normal seed rate.
I have been growing Firth then Canyon for seed for probably 20 years, and usually plant about 85 kg per ha.
Put a bit more wind on the combine, and blow the crap out.
Yes, I think you’re probably right with regards to seed rate. Being our first attempt, I asked my agronomist and local seed house and from memory I think we drilled at about 140kg/ha ....and had very good germination.

Our worst field yielded the best, so i think low seed rate theory correct. It was absolutely hammered by crows, i did consider righting it off. The field across the road that looked well didn't yield as much!

Do you control the crown rust adequatley? If crown rust gets into them later on it will jigger the bushel weight completley.

If milling oats are being rejected all over the Country, where are the millers obtaining oats of an acceptable quality?

And for those growing or buying feed oats: within reason, grain size has little effect on feeding value.

Aim for about 400 seeds/m2 here.

At a typical TGW of 40g this means 9.2 stone/acre or 160kg/Ha.

Elyann has an exceptionally high Kernel content, therefore the millers want it.

I see that Isabel is being propagated in the UK now. I’d try that if I were you. It has a very high Kernel % (not quite as high as Elyann) and an exceptionally high KPH. Very good straw strenght too as well as very good resistance to Crown Rust.

Both Elyann & Isabel were bred by the same Dutch breeder. Both are exceptional in different ways but I’d definitely go for Isabel if given a choice.

Mascani drilled here in October 54kg/hl and Jan/Feb drilled 56kg/hl but we suffer badly with crown rust so they receive a full fungicide programme. I bet I won't get a premium for that!
