Yes, just got a couple of fields with turnips in that we won't finish grazing till March, dont need to trample them down with cutter in Feb now.

Also thinking about ipm2 flower rich grass margin, 2-3m against bottom of hedge including the old cross compliance stip wouldn't be that much of sacrifice for £798/ha
I was thinking the same thing about ipm2 around field edges. Makes alot of sense without the 1metre cross compliance

Cross Compliance has NOT ended in Wales

And for info, under SFS to be introduced hedges that are to be counted towards your 10% habitat must be:

- either 1.5m high x 2m wide OR 2m high x 1.5m wide
- and must be stock proof without any artificial fencing
- any hedge entered in to the scheme must meet the above criteria by 2030 regardless of when you enter the scheme

The loons are free, Maurice. Fire up the catch nets
Open to interpretation. Must be capable of stopping stock in its own right i.e. thick bottom, not full of holes at the bottom doesn’t mean there can’t be a fence there surely. Otherwise it would result in miles of fences grant aided under agri-environment schemes getting ripped up.

won’t hold my breath though

Do I take it that the Welsh Assembly have just effectively banned hedge laying in Wales then?

Thats fwcking nuts! And I lay hedges for a living

And that is what will carry on being done (grant aided) to make hedges thick and stockproof.

To be fair, at least RPW have, for the first time, recognised that a thick bottomed hedge is better for wildlife, rather than a tall, straggly one cut every 3 years. That's some progress at least.🤷

They have also said that they might have to rethink their definition of stock proof...

Policy is being formulated by the NGOs such as RSPB and the Wildlife Trust.
Farmers are just supernumerary to the scheme.
They are jizzing themselves at what they perceive they'll do at the "collaborative level" under SFS

Yeah, I'm not knocking it in a way, and sure a good thick hedge is marvellous, but it's worth bearing in mind that glastir funding in wales for hedgelaying is £5.53 per meter, over the border here it is £19.34 per meter.
