I spoke to an EA guy in person yesterday and found it worrying what he had to say about flood prevention, climate change etc etc. I tried to explain how rivers were regularly dredged and blockages cleared up until the 90’s but apparently dredging is not effective and doesn’t help people down stream. Trees on the moors and hills seemed the popular thinking.

Can anyone direct me to a website please to explain this phenomenon of trees taking up water when the soil is at field capacity, followed by extremely heavy rain? I keep searching for an explanation for this but google has so far let me down.

I assume that when the trees float off in the floodwater they block the bridges and thus prevent flooding further downstream.

The problem with trees is that it would take 30 year before they hav any effect
My father planted son 20 years ago
And the land they are on is as wet as my land in combinable cropping
All the water out of the sky from now goes into the river Witham and is at Lincoln within 10 hours

For £25m you will get a lot of equipment and fuel to maintain the watercourses.

As a taxpayer money should be used to generate best value and at the moment it seems to be squandered on assessment and consultants rather than any real meaningful work.

In fairness I think that she was just saying what she had been told by the EA - they had followed the advice from the Met people - who weren't quite correct, mainly because the rain came from an unusual direction.

Particularly since following the Met Office of their weekly 'Deep Dive' into the weather on the youtube, I have had a great deal more understanding of the enormous number of variables and am surprised that they get the forecast so accurate nowadays compared to 40 years ago.

I am not a great lover of our Environment Minister but I don't think that she should be berated for this one - there are dozens more examples of how she should be getting things sorted.
