Is a colour sorter the only way? Will aspiration not get rid of some ?

Only real way is colour sorter. Gravity separator or blower will get some out but leave enough to be a problem usually.
Picking off manually as you pour onto heap out a small spout can help as they float/slide down the heap but not 100% and not practical for big quantities.

On farm alternative is put it through an auger or blower and the ergot drops to the edges of the heap. Load lorries out of the middle of the heap.

Aspirator will get rid of some, screens & sieves will take some out, gravity separator will take some out too. Not even all these combined will remove 100% of all shapes and sizes of ergot.

Aspirator will take out grass ergot. Colour sorter is the favourite. We do alot here on route to mills or processors.

Around here it’s about £23/t to protect a £25/t premium by the time you factor in an extra haul to the store and sorter. That assumes that ergot will be the only problem with it! Our spring wheat all ended up on the big feed heap to be blended away instead of taking this risk (by accepting another one!)
Have you considered a mobile colour sorter? Market Weighton based team have such a machine, takes out the extra haulage cost and would be good value for a decent tonnage.

In theory yes, but that doesn't translate into proportional results on intake.
We've seen elevated mycotoxin results this year (generally speaking) but only failed a handful of loads for high DON & ZON.

I can tell you that milling premiums just aren’t high enough for UK conditions if that’s any help.

I have found that the ergot seems to flow down the outside of the heap when being emptied out of the mobile drier, I just pick it out but admittedly not been much, just the odd few pieces per 27t batch, not had any rejections from it yet but prob will be eating my words when the next lot goes!
