Do you need the jabbing course aswell? I might tell them to bollox next time, I could sell as strong stores and probably do aswell, cull cows may be a problem.

I'm sure the NFU fought it to the death.

we sell our culls when they still want plenty of finish so don’t get knocked much if at all. I appreciate this may change as they Fck about with the rules.

I'll usually sell older cows with calves at foot, so would only be the barrens. But as you say, just sell as feeding.

I don't think it makes a bit of difference with the sheep.

Hrrrumph! I'll just have to see if a compromise can be reached, then.

What happens when I authorise a helper to treat an animal at a very busy time? Will my certificate cover anyone under my supervision, or will each need one?

One person per business to be responsible and supervise, as I understand it.
Like you, my vet trained me, subsequent vets have worked together with us over X years, and OH trained at college. But apparently those decades of experience don’t count.

I went to an injection course from my vet at a local pub. We had pie, chips and peas and the whole lot cost £15 and I took my neighbour for £10. A pleasant evening out and you wouldn't believe it but we were told you had to use a new needle every injection!

I wrote a letter of complaint regarding the necessity for me to pay third party professional fees as a requirement , that was in the summer, I am still waiting for at least an acknowledgement let alone a reply, I find that totally unacceptable and just rude, I wasn't rude in fact I complimented the inspector, so come on red tractor and the NFU who I believe are in full agreement with farm assurance, time to get realistic with the aims and costs. I could go on but not good for someone my age.

You are meant to use a new needle every time.

Yet when it comes to TB testing its fine to use the same needle for dozens of animals......

Like I said makes not one bit of difference when there heads in the bin, one carcass the same as the next when they’re on the hook! Seen them at market same buyer loose all the lambs in the alley FA an none Fa, load together and killed together! Just another way to knock the money down when buying, makes the assured ones cheaper! I’m sure I’m wrong though?

The Meds course is coming next year for beef and sheep apparently. Our vets charge a standard £200 for the beef herd plan no matter if you have suckler cows or just finishing cattle, next year it will only be £150 to update it,that will take no longer than 1/2 hr.So that takes the total cost of FABBL membership to £400/yr !
My vets did the course & the certificates for free, they want your custom.

You have hit the nail on the head,i don't think my vets want farmers anymore, that is after 35 years without a cross word.I should have changed when they stopped doing TB testing a few years ago, recently taken over by a large so called independent group and things have gone downhill since. To my mind £200 for less than an hour of office time is extorsion, and £150 for a follow up next year that will take a few minutes...

We get a 'certificate'? Wow! That makes it all worthwhile. I'll have yet another 'qualification'. Whoopedy-doo. Hope it comes with a title and letters to put behind my name. ?
On the other hand I'd have to replace all my business cards to reflect my new status. Is there a market for new and unused business cards I wonder?

Not sure why vets are the people reviewing antibiotic usage. It is the vets who has been pushing new antibiotics onto us for the last 60 years to make themselves more money. Probably should be the people selling foot baths and non antibiotic treatments reviewing antibiotic usage.

You mean those with a vested interest in selling us a (generally expensive) alternative?

My vet seems to have allowed for the reduction in AB usage, as I see the price of Alamycin LA has gone up by 50% recently, albeit still below some of the prices for it quoted on here.

We scraped through the farm assurance visit recently. The one advisory, for suckler cows, was to go on the medicine course run by the vet. Ours is £50 to include what will be a good “hot lunch”.
It’s easy to say it’s a waste of time but last year when in hospital a trainee made my arm very sore with repeated attempts to take blood. Coos feel pain too.
I share the concern about whether Red Tractor makes any difference in sales price, and whether some of the requirements are needed.
One person I know put it rather well in terms of:
Would he or she like to be an animal on that farm, and
Would he or she drink the coffee in the kitchen.
If the answer to both was ‘yes’ then it’s probably a good farm. I think I know what that means!
