I’ve been very fortunate to whilst having been in the falklands to get a chance to see a large sheep station. Whilst there the people got talking as farmers do and we started discussing markets etc. anyway from what I was told and I may have got this wrong but they get £40 for a fat lamb which is mostly shipped to the uk and some to Europe and sold as British lamb in British supermarkets they said. I know it’s a British overseas territory but how can this be right?

I remember a high profile case a number of years ago where Bernard Matthews were hatching turkey poults in the UK, transporting them to an eastern european country to be reared, and then after processing selling them in the UK as British turkeys.

The court ruled that as they had been initially hatched in the UK that they were indeed British turkeys and Bernard Matthews were doing nothing wrong.

So I guess by that same 'logic', it indeed is "British" lamb.

I expect its an easy way to pump.money in to their economy.
They've only got tourists otherwise. Bit like Wales when you think about it
The fishing rights that go with vast area that the Falklands Islands control, more than pays for it self. Never mind future oil extraction. The argies want the Falklands for the wealth that goes along with them, not because it's a rock close to them.

There are diamonds there and other minerals.

Anyone else remember those tins of Frey Bentos meat pies you had to stab in the lid then boil?

Happy days of student cooking
Yes, we had them here as well

could never understand or get my head around being in Australia & having tinned South American beef in our supermarkets

but, I guess we are closer to them than you are . . .
