Farm Batteries

This maybe should go in the Renewables bit but it's not about generation so I'll ask here.

Anyone using domestic battery storage to try and go off grid ie save solar or wind via batteries to use at night or other periods?

The tech must be getting there surely?

The people I know doing it are all using lead acid batteries still. The solar panels have dropped dramatically in price so the systems are much bigger, but mostly they keep the same size battery bank when it's time for new batteries.

I keep looking but as of yet they seem high in price, a solar installer said that unless you install some storage it’s difficult to even get a contract for exporting electric and get paid, on new installs of the small domestic 10kwh size.

this may not be true now, but I keep looking now and then, at current electric prices the payback times have fallen fast.
Post any good deals.

The tech is there. But it's very expensive, and (at current prices) is a long way from being cost-effective. If it makes you feel green, go for it. But not to "save money".

About 10 years ago we got carried away with watching too many Grand Designs episodes & were going to convert an old shearing shed ( 16 stand, roughly 16 x 32 metres ) to a house. In the end, we didn’t as it was going to cost too much.

Anyway, even then, going full solar / battery was still going to be cheaper than 1 power pole . . .

I’ve got a Tesla battery on new house powered by solar, hoping to put a wind turbine in aswell which they say will be possible soon. Quite a long pay back but seemed the right thing to do when building a brand new house. Charges automatically off grid off peak this time of year

Some of the new electric vehicles can also be connected to your house supply, acting as storage & being able to supply your house.
Fully off grid solar / wind / battery while also being able to charge your car for nothing.
Why wouldn’t you 🤷‍♂️
because in this country at this time of year you would soon end up with a flat car battery and no lights in your house unless you have candles.

a few years ago I was at Noccundra ( basically nothing but a pub & a community hall ) in western Queensland. Electricity was provided by diesel generators ( pub. Cool room, fridges, freezers etc etc ) & the publican was telling me how many 1000’s of litres of diesel he saved in a year by changing EVERY lightbulb to LED. He then went on to say that he was changing over to a full solar / battery set up ( he was a diesel mechanic, so he did love his big Diesel engines ) & just in the price of fuel alone it would have paid back in 5 years.

wind ?

the best systems use a combination of generation methods
trouble is wind turbines as they are , need rebuilds/can be unreliable etc , ie far higher running costs in comparison to panels anyway.
pity rape oil couldnt be used more effectivly in a genny to top up the batteries in winter because diesal bit dearer now.
but if i can go off grid i will in the next year or 2.one way or another.
