how's everything ticking along @Foregoneconclusion ?
the Joz still playing up?
things performing to your liking?
wats the work life balance like now with all the automation? many sleepless nights due to mechanical failures?

Hi

Thankyou for asking

The tech is performing well.

The Joz is definitely the weak link with dumbness built in and desperately frustrating to use. However it works most of the time and keeps the floor pretty clean. It is overdue it's first service so maybe a firmware update will improve things!

I failed to get my auto grazing system in place this year due to a catastrophically low milk price for a few months, this means that for all the fab things going on in the shed the grazing is compromised and i am probably leaving a litre or so per cow somewhere... now milking 177 and averaging 21 ish lires , the m2s are so comfortable at this level with 30 percent spare time ..

Night visits and breakdowns are rare so getting way more sleep and come on im a farmer..work life balance? .. still havent fot that squared away yet! But it is SO much easier. One person can effectively run the place on a daily basis- including calves and youngstock, this is a big change.

Masitis, lameness are down and fertility is way up - very few missed heats thanks to the collars; but still much to learn.

The feeding system is working daily buffer feeding grass and hay. Again a bit of tinkering getting the mix speed down and mix time right as the grass is very soft..

All i need is a steady milk price , an underpass, 1500 tons worth of silage clamp, some all weather tracks, and the auto grazing system. And phase 1 will be finished..!!

Would love to see pics/vid of feeding setup in operation.
It’s funny, as I’m a lowly beef & sheep farmer who likes to keep things as simple as possible.

But this whole level of sophistication fascinates me & hats off to you for putting your money where your mouth is for the whole setup

Your system is very impressive, especially the feed system, do you mind if I ask what you mean by an auto-graze system?
Thanks

So Next shed to get a quote for...
60m by 18m.

height at eaves 7.7m

Height at Ridge 10.9. Closed ridge

Roof pitch 20 degrees. 50 cm overhang of roof on both sides.

Roof clad steel sheeting. Dark green

6m bays , guttering etc.

Sides and ends Clad to floor with the same material.

1 bay (long side) will likely not clad to the floor but probably from 5m to gutter line

Steels painted well ,not galv.

There will be a crane running on 2 rails 2.5 m apart the length of the building. I have yet to get full engineer specs of the crane and the loading but the static weight of the crane is 3 tons.

Whether this has a bearing on the choice of steels remains to be seen .

Anyone got recommendations?
It will be a while before i can build it as planners will want thier pound of flesh...

Do you mind me asking what is the crane used for and have I understood it Correct as only being only 2.5m span

Interesting design, I assume it is a clear span portal frame building? So the crane is hung off the rafters only?

Like zis..
