I have quite a long farm track in to my steading and the stones ive been using to fill in potholes are causing the car damage,

what size of stone do people find works best for filling in potholes? 40mm? 20?

i have a track in the same 3/4 mile long , water let off points even if only spade width at regular intervals, I use 40 mm clean stone no dust in , find it pushes in within a day or two, if i use anything with fines included it turns to mud, be doing it a few years now using clean stone, track is getting harder base for it i feel,no expert , my experience only, i have 4 houses using same track and all their nonsense too, joys of neighbours and shared access.

Type 1 40mm down to dust, best stuff is that's been through a crusher as nice and angular and will lock together. Round stones are easier displaced and not as effective.

If you have pot holes best to take digger bucket and break area around it, fill in then compact. don't do it on a wet day and if there is a puddle pump it away first before repairing.

Use what we call 803 or sub base which is roughly 3/4 to dust, if you do not have the very fine stuff to pack in with it the water will accumulate in any low patches making the stone loose & potholes emerge.

Puddles are the worst. Get filled with water, then the speed merchants tank through causing the water to be splashed up taking your fill with it. Trees, especially, will concentrate drips to specific spots making the damage worse.

Mot type 1 granit is the best but around £30 ton in my area.crushed concrete to same size is ok too but lots of dust.road plannings are brilliant if you can get hold of them and if soaked in diesel and set fire too, will go back to how it was on road,(so I'm told😂)crushed asphalt is good too.just depends what you can get in your area.a ride on vib roll is worth its weight in gold too.

Any metalled track requires the ‘little and often’ input. Providing it has a good camber and rainwater run off is not allowed to pool then you are onto a winner.
Scalpings or type one. 40mm down is best.
I have made forest roads with road planings as well but only if they were cheap.
Off the M4 at Reading, they were tops👍 basically just the haulage and night time deliveries.
