It would be interesting to know if any of the UK farmers on here make more profit than they get in subsidies. I never did l got 90k in sub and a 50k profit. (a lot was rented)

Pulling down 20 year old stadiums and building new ones for a start. Giving themselves a pay rise as well.
Virtually all government utilities have been sold off in this country to pay off previous labor government debts. Most major new road builds are done by the private sector and paid for with tolls.
Sounds like bad government is endemic, even in our civilised countries.

It's an interesting point and one that can be easy to ignore while the sub tap is still running.

Personally, our Basic Payment for 2018 made up 45% of our net profit. I'm not to disappointed with that figure and if we weren't going through some major structural (family and business) changes that are "skewing" what we are doing somewhat, then I would be confident of it contributing an even lower ratio.

Reducing our reliance on it hasn't happened overnight though...:)

Sounds awfully familiar.

I personally don't think that selling off all the gov't assets really did the relationship between the gov and the general public many favours, but it was probably necessary at the time .

But, no government will ever be elected on the promise to spend less on polishing their knobs, even though it's possibly the responsible thing to do.

It's quite sad that living within our means is deemed unacceptable, both at individual and governmental level.
Despite the tax take on the items you mentioned, our roads are still laughable and dangerous.
Our health system almost copes, but you'd be mad to rely on it without your own insurance.
Especially for stuff like knee replacements etc, because it's quite a popular place for Aussies with stuffed knees to come on holiday and have "a skiing accident" - so it must function better here than over your way!

They do a reasonable job with financial stuff, but they could certainly do better.
So much funding is simply wasted . :(

Travel insurance must have a lower excess than private health does:rolleyes::ROFLMAO:
I didn't even know about it until quite recently, a workmate is going in soon for a new knee.
The surgeon said it "wouldn't be until after ski season, we have to clear the wards of Aussie farmers first" :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO: so apparently ACC does have its uses, after all

and not on farmers payments but its an easy target for those that take things for granted
I am not saying that it don't need changing but in comparison with the wastage that both our and the eu gov's preside over its p1ssing in the wind

just think about what a person would have to do to never use anything that the gov provides, in a developed country I would think it is more or less impossible
so there you all go, enjoy your subs learn to love them like docks :D:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:
Here, it's actually very possible because the gov't has disassociated itself to such a degree.
The ONLY actual gov't department that I deal with is the Inland Revenue, who seem to want quarter of a mill each year in income tax, then another bit for GST from my businesses (y)
all of which amounts to roughly the PM's salary (y)(y)
so they can run up roughly a million worth of debt per month and call it progress
(y)(y)(y)

but all other "government" stuff is handled by private entities:
Energy companies
Line companies
Telecomm. companies
Contractors for roads, water mismanagement, for sewage treatment etc etc

So it makes for quite an interesting "Budget" because they aren't actually in control of the spending directly - or even indirectly, other than to provide a slush-fund and take tenders for works

Yet the actual 200+ MPs and advisors all draw quite a decent salary and perks, considering what they actually achieve in a month.
I'd hope if I performed as poorly, I'd be sacked .

What about someone pulling in £400k from overseas each year and paying a third of it straight to the tax dept like a good chap, paying tax 3 times on fuel, on groceries, and on electricity?

Where's his "sub"? Or does he not need one?
he is probably getting one but if he makes that much it may well be pin money/services to him

I have made my position clear on farm payments a number of times on here and other forums its not changed I am no big fan but that said I am not going to apologise for taking it to anyone who [if they live over here at least] most likely has their hand in the biscuit barrel in some way that I do not
farm payments are an easy target its quite obvious what folk get near enough, other subs are not quite so out in the open

It struck me about 5 years ago, when my then boss (a dairy farm owner) passed the comment that "you'll make more money out of my farm than I will, this year" and we went on to discuss how the "minimum wage act" somehow doesn't apply to those who are employers as well (n)
AKA businesses aren't protected from a natural death, but "the General Public" are prevented from starving or not being able to pay their rent, to buy clothes.
And thus, we decided at that point we'd best get on with making his business spit out a bit more profit for him

But it does show that the government cares about "The People" to a good extent, just as long as those people don't happen to own a farm. :)
Then it cares about your income :sneaky:
