Farmers wanted to test new Liver Fluke Detection device!

Farming Online www.farming.co.uk are currently working with Liverpool University to develop a better Liver-Fluke forecasting service (updating the Ollerenshaw risk model)

Part of the Liver-fluke project involves consulting members of the farming industry to use their knowledge to help improve the liver-fluke model that we develop with the University.

Once complete, the liver-fluke model is a service where a user can feed in their location and feed out a liver-fluke forecast for their farm. We are looking for farmers who would be willing to trial the model and provide feedback.

The aim is to help to decrease the chances of infection which costs the industry circa 300 million pa due to poor livestock performance, sheep mortality,costs of treatment and improve productivity.Farmers need accurate information to manage livestock to minimise risk of exposure.

We are looking to also source some fields from willing farmers that are prone to waterlogging in order for us to train a satellite model as part of the project.

In terms of time / involvement as little or as much as you like – some tasks may take only a few minutes! We are looking for help with the following:
1) Producers to trial the mobile model when ready for testing later in the year - the liver-fluke model is a service where a user can feed in their location and feed out a liver-fluke forecast for their farm
2) Waterlogging – we need latitude/longitude of any fields prone to waterlogging to help train a satellite algorithm we are developing as part of the project.
3) Offer appropriate fields that we can sample
4) If we identify that fluke is worse under specific weather conditions, it would be great to seek opinion as to whether that is a valid relationship in the data
5) Choosing how farmers would like us to best display the liver fluke risk result on their mobiles – we have layouts we can email over for you to opt for

Difficulty level is low and we will be on hand to assist where needed ...

I don't have fields prone to waterlogging but do have rushy field corners, which must be the source of my fluke.

On-Farm Liver Fluke cases wanted to test Liver Fluke Early Detection App
Thank you to everyone who has helped us with the Liver Fluke Early detection app we are developing with the University of Liverpool.
Livestock producers will be able to input a location and output a practical fluke forecast for their farm to help with treatment timing. Early detection of liver fluke to help with accurate dosing is vital to avoid poor performance and also prevent inappropriate use of flukicides We have been busy compiling one of the UK’s largest data repositories containing nearly 100,000 records of fluke data including data from bulk milk tank tests, faecal egg counts, copro-antigen tests, serology and post-mortem data. Progress on the model’s development has been accelerated as a result. We are at the stage where we now want to test the accuracy of the model against actual cases of fluke on farm. Farmers are currently forwarding us data to test but we need as many instances as possible. Can you help? Simplyprovide us with a location / year/month when known fluke occurred past or present Liver fluke status - was it high/medium/low risk? You don’t have to tell us! Challenge the model.

We want to use the information to run it the Liver Fluke app and then feed our results back to you.
