Farming stigma…. Working like “crazy”

Funny thing is, if you had different friends in regular jobs, you would probably be seen to be the one to be the workaholic.
Very few of my friends are farmers. They do everything from soldiers, bankers, stock brokers, commercial property, lawyers etc. I reckon they almost all work harder than I do (though i dont tell them this), and they all think farming is a fairly terrible job, albeit with fun toys!

Does anyone actually “ work “ 14 hours a day 7 days a week ? I know alot of hard working people but i don’t think I know anyone who will consistently do that . Also know plenty that like to be seen working late etc and like to tell everyone how busy they are ….. their usually doing the least in reality

Or picking the wrong women?
They were both good hard working mothers who didn’t ask for much but got nothing . I would say there standard of living would be worse now but every thing they do is done as a family and a really happy family at that

I often think this, how can anyone stand that amount of work. I think in reality a lot of people might be "at" work for that amount of time but how productive are you really on a friday evening at 8pm?

When i was young, my grandparents left me in no doubt that there was no time for sport or other distractions. I never saw my father.
Yes remember local dairy farmer met kids at school gate at that time with their tea and then straight to milking These kids children still milking, lots of fancy machinery, more expensive rented land which they outbid everybody to get and for what. I have always thought you have to add a bit of work smarter not harder to the mix as you end up on the merry go round of working for the bank, the machinery manufacturer , the landlord and not yourself. These are probably the reasons that these long hours have to be worked as cannot afford hired help. Purely a personal choice however.

I definitely know a few people like this… they are like machines and think of nothing else… Spend £120k on a new tractor and only shop in the out of date “offers” section in the super market.

Reading about the Clapham Junction rail crash in 1988 I was amazed to read that the signal technician who made the mistake that caused it, told the enquiry that he had worked 120 hours that week or 17 hours per day. 12x7 = 84!! From Wikipedia report - 'He had also performed the work during his 13th consecutive seven-day workweek.'!!!

We have it easy I reckon.

Describe your typical day
what time of year? in the winter im calving, feeding/bedding cows, getting straw in from fields a load or 2 a day its rowed up on endrigs, load of silage in the from stacks in fields, mucking sheds, machinery maintenance jobs, miles of fences to maintain, heaps of drainage to do, farm tracks to maintain, barley to bruise, paperwork to do i never run out of jobs
