Farmland flooding

Having just read that ADA ( my take on comment) that farmland should be flooded and used as water storage. Now I would not wish flooding in someone’s house even my own but at what point is the EA and IDB going to understand it’s our living wiped out for a year.We don’t get insurance .If they don’t clear the plug hole how much longer will it take for the penny to drop this is most of the problem. We had a large planning passed nearby ,no one took any notice it was next to land and a river that floods, infact it was not even mentioned in EA or IDB response only by objectors.

Seems more and more that its a policy aim to put farmers (arable and livestock) out of business. Use low-lying land as flood retention in winter and devalue other land for building on. Marginal and upland to be rewilded to offset other industries emissions.

Short-sighted and idiotic but fits perfectly with the populist politics we're stuck with and getting votes from urban areas.

There is flooding and flooding. Historically some land will always flood in times of very high rainfall especially rainfall causing winter snow melt, when land is frozen and it can do nothing but drain to the rivers. Where these rivers flow through historic flood plains we have to recognise from time to time that flooding will occur and farmers should farm accordingly.
However where land is deliberately flooded, this is a different matter. Common law says that any works which may cause flooding must alleviate the issues by building flood defences for owners, other wise compensation must be given.

Our land was drained by goverment grant in the late 80s ,it seems to me that lowland gravity related drainage is ignored as all I keep reading is how wonderful the bloody pumps are keeping farm land drained.Explain why pumped land that should flood is given funding and expect beautiful fertile land near rivers to flood.Time we started shouting ,lost count of phone calls to IDb last year for a site visit Infact I don’t recall even getting a call back.If we pay drainage rates I expect equal respect .10 years I was on a drainage bd and never can recall such total lack of understanding we have now.
