Looking for advice on feeding rape to incalf heifers/2nd calvers, spring calving starting 1st April. Have introduced them on to it and feeding along single wire roughly 500m long and just moving around 1m a every second day as fair bit of rough grass on the lie back and have ring of straw and standard cattle mineral. Was trying to introduce them gradually. Aiming for about 70% diet rape and rest straw once we get going. Will feed this up until about end of january then go onto silage on hill. Average condition score is 3.5 with nothing under 3 so just looking for maintance plus a wee bit weather depending.
Anything i should be wary of? Will standard minerals be enough? Iodine? should i go for less inclusion of rape? Any pitfalls i should be looking out for? Cattle so far are very content and taking to it well. Very little wastage when just getting to eat whats under the wire. Apologies if this thread is already out there but couldn't find anything when i searched.
Any advice greatly appreciated, Cheers John
