Feet - an alternative discussion

To hill dairy, A kilo of Potassium Permanganate will last you for years, simply put a level teaspoonful in your footbath and mix it up, this will be effective for a few days at least, use it also for sterilizing calf buckets, and washing your hands, etc, You can also safely use it as a weak solution on cuts and grazes they will heal up twice as fast, for convenience I make a strong solution in a plastic bottle, then slosh a little into a bucket and use this, good luck, let us know how you get on please, as for the footbath it only needs to be a strong pink colour, not black, this will save you a lot of trouble, The Three Cow Guy.

To durry cows, You dont understand the connection between Trace elements and bad feet, when the T E's are at the correct level all animals consume up to one third less food as they will be contented, as a cow can carry up to 100 kilo's and more in her stomach its no wonder her feet packs up, animals will milk better when the T E's are correct on much less forage, anyone telling you to get more silage into your cows so to make more profit is either completely ignorant or down right dishonest with you, hence the od saying Beware everyone Better dressed than yourself, so watch them. The Three Cow Guy. P S, If your cows tend to be a little pot bellied after feeding, its ten to one your pastures are lacking in essential T E's

To Hill Dairy. In the last blog I told you to use one level teaspoon of Potasium Permanganate in your 200 gallon foot bath, this was wrong, it should have been 1/4 of a level spoonful as this amount will be strong enough, but it does not matter really as P P is not a dangerous pollutant if it gets into river water,it is used by decorative fish people to clean up Fungal infections etc on their fish, so this shows you that it is safe for use with wild life, a friend of mine with a 100 acre farm depended completely on one well for all his water , including his cattle drinking water, also his and a neighbours domestic water, he has put a level teaspoonful of P P in his well every sunday morning for years with no bad effect at all on anything. The Three Cow Guy.

To hill dairy, Previously I told you that Potasium Permanganate would be effective in your footbath for a few days, this may not be completely true, I have since spoken to a fish farmer who told me that when it turns from purple to a brown colour it has oxydised and then should be added to or replaced, this is probably correct, although on the scale I used it on cattle and sheep's feet I never had a failure. even so it is still very cheap to use, plus the fact that it is not a problem if it eventually gets in a stream. The Three Cow Guy. Fish farmers use Pot Per at the rate of one and a half gram in a cubic meter of water [220galls]
tocleaar fungal infections in fish.

Well we have used it and I do think that it has good antibacterial qualities so would be effective against dermatitis but we haven't used it for a prolonged period exclusively yet as over the winter when it was wet we were still alternating with formulin as we were trying to keep there feet harder. So although we kept on top of the dermatitis over the winter it could have been the formulin. At the moment are cows are out and we're not seeing any dermatitis as it's so dry and cold. But when it does start to appear in plan to do a trial running just PP and see if it clears it. It's certainly cheaper and safer than formulin.

All you read on here is how pedigree bulls don't last, are over fat when sold, and have bad feet, perhaps in their keenness to avoid too much physical work, the bull breeders have lost the art of presenting a bull for sale, the bulls were kept in concrete floored pens with a small bedded area at the back, and did road work every day. I think this is one chap who does know what he's talking about.
We have very little problem with the milkers (only concrete we have is dairy yard) .....but the bulls....My god don't get me started:shifty: We have a team of about 6 bulls for the milkers. We only run 1 at a time for 3 to 4 weeks(calve all year round) very few of them make a full 4 weeks due to breaking down....

@Hill Dairy are you still using potassium permanganate in the foot bath?have you found it effective enough against DD or not?
Were mainly using formulin as we have ended up having to walk them over a piece of unconcreated track which is not ideal so we were trying to harded there feet up with formulin. We have used the Permanganate for periods and we havent seen any increase in dd which has been a fairly rair occurrence this year thankfully but cant say for sure.

Would it neutralise the formalin if used together?

Well I've just Ordered a kilo too. Just done some googling and seems like thethreecowguy's thoughts on disinfectant and healing properties is correct. IF this works it could easily be the most cost effective footbath solution ever......
She who must be obeyed ordered some for me off eBay. Time will tell. A handful of cows are repeat offenders, most are fine, deep down I know the answer is Bodmin with them.

Any body know how long a concentrated solution of potassium permanganate would keep for? I want to auto dose the foot bath with 3 litres using the peristaltic pump, from a drum of concentrated PP.
