Nailing a square of ply to the top before knocking in will stop the top being damaged, remove ply when you have finishedQuite disappointed in this strainer I had today, don't like cutting tops but this had mushroomed beyond recognition and needed tidying up.
I'll try that see how it goesNailing a square of ply to the top before knocking in will stop the top being damaged, remove ply when you have finished

Has anyone used the steel Versalok posts and Hampton box strainers from Hampton Steel, the company that now makes Tinsley/Ryloc wire? I saw them yesterday at the Ploughing and they really caught my eye. Looks much more user-friendly than other systems. I expect to have 700m to do next year and I only want to do it once.

Doing quite a lot with it at the moment.
Using octopost for strainers as like box system. Also doing some fields with octopost stakes.
Versolock is more expensive. Similar to clipex. Far slower to attach net than clipex but in difficult conditions it is more flexible. I was on a very difficult run up the side of an overgrown hedge with a lot of stone and tree roots and rock solid ground. It went in well using a petrol post driver and a home made sleeve that was the length of the finished stake. Clipping on wire is fiddly at first but easier than conventional stapling once you get the hang of it.
But I'm not convinced that it's the total future. I find octopost quite good to work with and its cheaper and a 25 year warranty.
And it looks so much better.
The deciding factor is my gas stapler.
I can staple up a net in a stake in about 6 seconds! Dead easy. Clipping the steel posts is a lot slower.
Best doing a bit before committing to a big purchase perhaps.
