Fert for grass - hay and grazing

Hey

ive got around 15 acres of grassland, 8 of which we graze, horses, sheep, cattle, and the rest is for hay then grazed in winter by sheep.

I was going to get a bag or two of fert to spread in the coming weeks, but a lot of places see, to have minimum orders, but mole country stores have some in. They do a 25.5.5 plus 10 sulphur for £155+vat or a 20.10.10 plus 10 sulphur for £185+vat.

what are peoples views on which one to use, and will 2 bags cover it?

2 big bags is 1200÷15=80kg acre
Only 38 units so wont be a massive hit

Depends how intensive you want to push it
And how many stock are relying on fodder

Grass uses on average 2 units a day

2 horses, 2 cows, 12 ewes and 2 tups so not massive amounts. although the horses give it a good going at.


ive just got two tups- on the hay field at the minute and will bring them back down in a couple of weeks. Last year we ended up being quite short on grass because of the weather, and were about 25% down on hay too. But we didn’t put any fert on at all.

Just bear in mine that you need to make sure the grass has used the nitrogen before making hay!!

Give it too much and the horses feet might fall off! Seriously though, I've heard many complain about spring grass growth and laminitis.

Get a bag of each, put the 25.5.5 on the grazing area, and the 20.10.10 on the hayed area.
Just "make it fit" . I can assure you that's what we do, just speed up and slow down and make it fit

That way your hayed area gets a smidge more PKS to cover the extra removed and the grazed bit gets more N to kick it away in the spring?

Agree, hard enough to keep the protein out of them at the best of times

Just be wary of ferting hay ground, heavy crops take some making unless the weathers perfect
