Why is MOP / TSP so popular still when there are far cheaper (and arguably better) ways to get p and k ?

Never really understood this
Yes FYM is undoubtably the cheapest and best form of P and K,big added bonus this year is moisture retention as well, but I realise its not available in a lot of areas.

Unless you have an artic load at a time, Fibropohos 0:12:12 delivered & spread by local contractor is £140/t here (probably around £125 if full artic dropped in and same contractor spread at 675kg/ha). With 0:24:24 delivered at £280, there's not a lot in it here apart from your own spreading cost and the question of availability.

I was working on Fibrophos cost 2 yrs ago of £+/-90/t, long haul to you from storage I expect.

I ordered 2 loads of 0:12:12 last week for £85/t tipped. That's South West Devon, quite a long way from the rest of the world.

We apply rotationally ahead of spring crops

Same 15 yr old belt Spreder we used for solid N - cheap old machine really
Is that the same one you refurbished a while back?

Perhaps we ought to look into a lime/fibrophos spreader.

We apply all our p&k at establishment with 1 pass. Farms that don't do this around here are obvious to see this spring.

What dose rate do you base that on? £30/ha means nothing without that piece of info. £30 off a big dose on an index 0 for potatoes has a different meaning to that for a straw chopped 8/t/ha wheat crop at index 2.

So the average of two TSP prices I got on Friday was £320 per tonne and MOP £265.

I then did a cost calculation to apply 60kg/ha P2O5 and 60kg/ha K2O so a typical arable rotation maintenance P & K application where straw is chopped and based on my selling price Fibrophos 00-12-12 worked out £27/ha cheaper than the TSP and MOP.

I also did 70kg/ha P2O5 and 105kg/ha K2O for a straw baled scenario and Fibrophos 00-14-21 was £34/ha cheaper and finally I did 90kg/ha P2O5 for those applying TSP and P-Grow 00-23-00 was £35/ha cheaper.

All prices were based on product only so spreading costs needed to be added.

Spreading is dear, hence we put three years worth on per pass. 27 per hectare over 900ha is well worth it I think.
I'm going for Kalfos this year and they're recommending the same thing. Going to have to do some early soil testing and decide from there. Been getting by on OM for the last 3 years but want to raise indices a little, and release locked up K.

Yes that’s the one - we ran it as a demount in our Bateman fur about 10 years before going liquid and retiring it to jut p / k application about 5 years ago - built that chassis for it last year so it could be used behind a tractor (thred on here)

Contractor spreading is expensive but machines that can do it are cheap and fairly simple

Never understood why farmers seem to default think of lime or base fert application as a contractor job ? It’s no more complex than many other things we all do

It still requires a machine that most don't have for a couple of weeks/year, though the savings on contractors would get a lot of that back. £10.75/ha for variable rate spreading around here. Biennial doses.
