We have just delivered this, grower was considering moving away from P/H combi to a more minimal or direct approach, but with spuds in the rotation and the ever more catchy autumn's it was thought best to stick with combi. If required PH can be removed from frame and discs put in its place for a more minimal tillage situation.
What takes out your wheel marks? Your power harrowing it then running over cultivated ground with a hopper with 2t of seed in it.

Front hopper is a pain but spreads the weight and some of them have wheels on to help further. Surely a folding 4m powerharrow and drill is putting plenty of weight on the rear axle of the tractor before putting a seed hopper on top as well?

A lot of drills are designed for big acreages in other parts of Europe and may not be suited to extremely wet conditions, I would seek out people who work them in wet conditions before buying one.

Surely the weight of the hopper is transferred onto the packer and the coulters? Two 3m outfits will be cheaper, bigger output and float better though.

Been running a 4 meter folding Lemken and Dalbo front press for 3 seasons now. Only comes out when the Vaderstad’s can’t go. Got under pressure last season so bought me a 3 meter Horsch KR. Got under pressure again this year so I’ve hired a 2 year old 4 meter folding Horsch KR with front hopper that has a ring press underneath. Tried drilling last week with the Lemken but it couldn’t go, it just bulldozers between the packer and in front of the coulters. The 4 meter Horsch went away no problem. I’m already planning on another Horsch been in the fleet for next year.

Why are front hoppers a pain ?

I ve just got a 4m kuhn combi with disc coulters. Not the seed flex ones as I find then block in certain soil types in the wet. really nice simple light weight drill. Folding with a front tank look to heavy, and can squeeze through a 14ft gateway with mine,.
these drills now a days are way to complicated, you just want get on.
The lesser disc that you have won't drill into anything like the dodgy conditions the seedflex will . We've tried them both to their limits!!.
When the seedflex is blocking it really is time you shouldn't be in the field.

I agree there that seedflex is v good yes its got a lot of moving & wearing parts but its designed to drill in such a variation of soil types
wet or dry.
Id like to think Horsch would make that KR into 4m one day & no front hoppers please
gateways are bad enuff with a front press on but atleast you can see over it.

how to make a bad idea worse ?

There are 'wavy disc' wheel eradicators between wheels and Coulter bar. Also depending on what Coulter pressure you are running and if you have about 1 tonne of seed in there the wheels can come off the ground.

Why are front hoppers a pain ?

They're ok if rigged up for a season. Just. It takes a bit longer for seed to get from front hopper to coulter than it does when the hopper is at the back. Similarly, it takes longer for the pipes to empty at the bout end. I know tech can take care of this if necessary, but it adds unnecessary complication we don't need.
Visibility impaired
More cost
Can't use a front press
Our combi goes on 2 different tractors some years, having pipes down both is very inconvenient.

We tolerate a front hopper for fert at taty planting time, but it's on for the season, then off again.

For us, a 3m combi & direct drill works well. We'd need a significant increase in area before 4m started to be worth the hassle.

There's 2 been sold locally that I know of this year . Only thing puts me off the KR is the wide spacing

Horsch make a solid 4m with a hopper on the back
