Ford 4600 2wd to 4wd conversion?

They've not done something daft like put the front axle on the wrong way round? I used to drive a 7600 with a 4wd conversion and the prop ran on the nearside of the tractor, no crossing under the sump.

Welcome to the other side , Mark :)
I have met Mark , and his Pre Force . An absolute beauty . He doesent shy back in his restorations.

There is , or was , a county 4600 2 miles away from me. Last time I saw it could be 8 years ago , and it was permanently attached to a Keenan 100. He bought it about 1982 or 3. I would swear that it had power steering . He removed the 4 wd axle in the 90s when something happened it , and the cost of repair was prohibitive . He had by then a JD 3350 4wd , and has gone green since. 6800 6910.

The axle is definitely the right way round, it's just that the drive for the front axle is a centre drive and the Dropbox is mounted one side of the gearbox so the propshaft must run at an angle. It def sounds weird but that seems to be how it works. That's why I was hoping somebody might have a picture.

You've a county drop box and a carraro front axle. Don't think the shaft will clear the underside cos county front axle diff should be off centre.
So do you reckon the front axle has been changed or possibly the Dropbox? What Dropbox did the 4wd Ford (not the county) 4600 use?

If you could find a county front axel like this one and turn her into a 4600 four county would be the job.

I'd say the shaft would clear alright but it would be extremely tight, I cut a length of pipe to test it not long after I got it just to see.

A mate has a ford 4600 4wd that his dad bought new, i cant promise when but ill try and get over to his place and get some photos for you, but as ransome cowboy said i dont think the carraro axle and county drop box are compatible, i think the ford drop box sits lower than the county one. Also i think but not 100% sure, your missing a drop box on the front axle too.

Thanks again, it would be much appreciated. Yes you are correct, there should be a Dropbox on my front axle, I presume that's where the problem was as the rest of the axle is fine as far as I can see.

Yep that dropbox definitely looks different to mine. Unfortunately the guy who was selling it wasn't at the auction or else he was and didn't want to let on he owned it so I don't know the story of the tractor. It's hard to know is it something somebody was trying to convert to 4wd or did the original front axle get damaged and they were trying to fit the carraro axle instead, the colour of the front tombstone and axle certainly doesn't match the rest of the tractor. Thanks very much for the help and photos lads, it has cleared up a good few questions for me.

I think I was reading Classic Tractor Magazine a week or two ago and they had a story about these 4wd Ford.
I think it said towards the end of the Country time they were offering Carraro axles, but had a supply problem from Italy so only 9 were made. I also think they were offered as a dealer kit. But I could be wrong about it all.

That sounds interesting, I must take a look. Was it a recent issue of classic tractor?
