Ford diesels always seemed a bit confusing. Some with a family name, sometimes with cubic capacity (rounded up or down) and sometimes by a number designation (like 27**E).
I may be corrected but the 50s diesels were 4D and 6D, the latter also know as the 590E.
Those were replaced by the Dorset family and main quick visual difference would be the fuel pump attached directly to the timing chest. (the older models were driven by an external shaft). The Dorset was replaced by an uprated series in the early 80s known as the Dover series. This I believe was close to the launch of the Ford Cargo truck. I think the Dover disappeared in the early 90s.

Interesting stuff, thanks.
I have this old JCB 4c backhoe from 1960's. I do not know what all is original. This JCB has this 6-cylinder Ford engine, now with some slight issues I try to fix...

That's unusual, is that a conversion? Have you got a some kind of additional back plate to attach the front bucket? Some more photos would be good. Are you OK if I share the photo on an old plant forum?
Thanks

I really do not know what kind of conversion this is. Obviously the roof/cabin is replaced. The engine, not a clue. I know that some JCB 4c where produced with 6-cylinder Ford engines. Is that original, I do not know.
Funny is that many details I have assumed made later, are original. Very hand made, thick weldings and such...
I think my next project is to locate all possible plates and numbers. Not easy for me, the beast is painted many times and many layers!

I am very happy for all ideas or pointers where to get any info about this engine — or JCB 4c :)

Hi, I have the same engine on a static 50kva generator. I am needing a injection pump for this engine as the one on my engine packed in last year due to lack of oil. I didn't realize my particular injection pump was lubricated by its own oil and not from the engine itself, hence I never had checked the oil level in the pump and its has failed due to lack of oil and the local repair shop for these sorts of things can get most parts except for the main shaft of the pump and that is the part along with a few others that I need so right now its looking like the engine is scrap which is a shame as its a really good engine. I don't know whether to take the engine off and put a pto gearbox on the generator and run it with the tractor when needed, which I must admit is very rarely nowadays or try and look for a suitable replacement engine. Any ideas or suggestions or if anyone is looking for one of these engines for parts minus the injection pump of course get in touch . cheers.

A now 85 year old uncle of mine brought a JCB 4C back with him , after a Christmas visit to see his brother in Manchester in early 1972 . It had a large cab , no doors , the back of the cab was open . No jack legs , the whole back actor moved up and down with 1 big ram . And a 4 cylinder Diesel Major engine . He replaced the engine with another Major engine , from a tractor with compressor/no hyd lift .
It was a big heavy cumbersome digger , but with great digging ability.
He kept it about 4 and a half years . And bought a " G " 1969? 3C in late 1976 , with a reconditioned engine , also from Manchester . Sloped back front window smaller cab . He had that up to approx 10-12 years ago . He bought a 5 stud back axle square cabbed 3CX , 1991 ish ?

Early JCB TLBs were Fordson Major based until the point when the Dagenham tractor finished and the World 000 series started at Basildon. JCB switched to a BMC Nuffield skid at that point either 3 or 4 cylinder. The Leyland skid was used until about 1980 on the 3C111 in manual form. With the introduction of the Build 5 powertrain right at the end of the 3C111 only the Leyland 4.98 engine (BMC origin) was carried forward. The Leyland engine was continued with JCB until about 1982/3 (exact date I cannot remember) in the 3CX and also the Telehandlers of the day. Now where is my anorak?

hi, sorry original post should have read 'these were the parts I needed'. When we couldn't get parts I told the shop just to bin the pump rather than spend time putting it back together and to save me a journey to collect it so I don't have the my old injection pump. All I can remember was that it was a simms inline.

Hi, did you ever find out more info on this engine number?
I am certain they are the Dorset family but still can't find out which model etc.
This is a picture of my generator engine, no id plates at all, just the castings, the serial number is S929697, this suggests july 74 year. This pic is,the cu" capacity but its unclear.

Got a pump from John Manners, Combine breakers north of Newcastle. Getting it checked out at a diesel specialist b4 putting it on.

Thanks.
