hi went to use the digger last night and saw alternator light on.. popped off the covers and belts shreaded.(didnt notice it over the weekend when using it..)
i see the hydraulic pump runs via a shaft to the front pulley so no way to just slip a belt on..
pulley held on by 4 bolts. access near impossible from above or below and not sure how to hold engine so it doesnt turn

removed front grill to look inside, pivited front cooler and found a belt cable tied sitting there, but unfortunately its too short as it wont slip over the pulleys even trying to force it (what a shame)

so question please has anyone every changed a belt please? if cooler is removed is it easier to unbolt the hydraulic pump and slide off the splines, instead of messing arround with the 4 bolts on the pully.. access very limited as 4x4 system in the way and a huge front counter weight.. front rad cover looks like 1/2 tonne too... water pump i see has a bit of play in the bearings so not sure if i should change that too(got knows how i get to that??)

many thanks in advance

If there's play in the pump bearings,I'd be inclined to replace it ,especially now that you know about it. You wouldn't want to be replacing the rad too when the fan blades decide to come adrift!! I'd expext the grille and front nose cone would need removing followed by the hydraulic tank and then the oil cooler and radiator as a piece perhaps. That'll let you at the water pump and likely the bolts on the crank pulley to let the shaft back to change the belt.
@76masseyman and @Mur Huwcun if I remember right, have or had a 655c. Might know more...

Did a belt years ago on a 550 but can’t remember how. Think we just moved the pump forward maybe? Otherwise it’s the bolts on the coupling.

For water pump whole front end cowling needs removing or moving forward to move radiator forward I think unless you can drop fan into the cowling. C series is easier than earlier ones as the front cowling is a lot more metal.

Mine’s up the yard and I’m about today so will have a look later on

I had the same problem with a Hymac 370 and a Fiat tractor. Replaced both with link type belting. Quick east fix.Fiat still working . Hymac ran until scrapped. Won't fix your water pump bearings though.

Even with the alternator slackened right off?
yes, even unbolted the adjustedr commpletely.. just checked belt cable tied in there and its 1382mm... the belt i have just bought is 1425mm so although great idea having one there as spare its the wrong one sadly)

do you know how to stop engine turning please , as auto, putting in gear doesnt lock engine every 90 degrees.
Take starter off and get someone to put a pry bar in ring gear as you undo bolts on front pulley.
I have a small air ratchet that just fits in there to undo them
Right barsteward of a job though.

how easy is it easier to remove the front grill, hydraulic cooler and then undo the 2 bolts on the hydraulic pump and pull pump forward off the splines please.. im on my own so start prybar ect great if a few people there..

If I'm picturing it correctly, its similar to a 4610 of mine. Couldn't get the hydraulic pump drive shaft away from the front pulley enough to get the belt behind. Only way of getting the drive shaft off completely was to roll the front bolster/axle forward. An easier/quicker option would be to fit a twist link belt. Cut it to size and wrap around pulley then join up once around front pulley.

Had a fantastic bit of luck... took the alternator off.. put belt on and squeezed alternator back in.. and adjusted it back up..on the very min adjustment but on and tension good.. water pump not leaking so im going to pencil that in another time as such a huge job.. thankyou to everyone with suggestions and advise. Really greatfull

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help. My 655d has a snapped 4wd push pull selector cable. A normal cable won’t push it back into 2wd so I’m having to get underneath to pull it manually. I can’t seem to find one listed online. Has anyone found a parts supplier for these diggers? I’d wondered if I could get one made somewhere?
Many thanks for any help.
