Will a 1982 6610 have the 'rubix' cube gearbox? It says it's column change... And if so what was so bad about those boxes?

You've obviously never used one. My Dad had one on the farm he worked on and got on with it quite well. Not sure which gear it is but to up / down one gear was about half a dozen movements of the lever. My only experience of one was a trade in tractor that I roaded back to the depot, found top gear and left it there.

Column change was the successor to the Rubik cube box. We had an early 6610 (X reg) that was converted to column change which was a simple H pattern on one lever 1-4 & 5-8 gears and the other lever high, low and reverse. A1982 model therefore could be either, best to confirm/check.

Drove both types rubix and h pattern. Got on well with them both tbh. Think there were issues with rough operators incorrectly using it and the gears jamming, compared to some eighties wagon gearboxes it was quite simple and easy to use

Sorry for the bumping this up but does anyone have a conversion kit for the rubix cube. Or am I better off changing to floor change

Floor change is a completely different box to the synchro used in the column change. You can swap the whole gearbox if you can find a good used one. If you want to swap a rubix to H pattern you’ll need the gearbox top cover and the linkages and levers off a breaker.

Bite the bullet and go for a floor change.More reliable and when you want to sell more takers and worth a few bob more.

Not much bad
The h pattern was good
A missed opprtunity to have left hand shuttle though
I often reached over with left hand forreverse on loader work.
A big improvement on ih 584 it replaced

Also, don't look at these through 2025 CVT guidance ready eyes. A lot of these tractors would have been replacements for a 5000

The column change was nothing like as bad a people think, the H pattern was actually very good.
We had a column change one years ago, to say it was a bit worn was an understatement but Dad and I could always find gears. No other one I’ve driven since has been so slack, even ones at dealer going for export!!!!
