France to link food prices to farmers’ cost of production!!!

The French president Emmanuel Macron wants to shake up the food sector and ensure producers are price setters rather than price takers.

The plans, which are part of the president’s ambitions to address the imbalance of power in the food sector, are aimed at returning more money to farmers.

Under his plans, the starting price in negotiations would be set by farmers, so food prices could better reflect the cost of production.

French farmers, as in the UK, have borne the brunt of an intense supermarket price war over the past few years, which have contributed to squeezed margins.

Could this be the way forward for the UK also???

If you want more money, add value.

If you produce world commodities you will get paid at world market rates.

Nice idea but there's only so many ways to add value and not all producers could do it. What about the ones that can't get that edge due to isolation or infrastructure? Do you really think the customers are there for mass produced added value products?

The interesting statistic that came out of Macron's discussion to me, was that for every 100 euros worth of food going into a supermarket trolley, only 6.50 euro finds it's way back to the producer.

At least beef is much closer than that:). In fact what we get and what the supermarket charge seem so close that direct sales just Arn't worth the bother
