Is there much demand for fresh calved heifers? If so, what breeding? Any margin in rearing kiwi cross heifers and selling them as fresh calved?

Market average locally for mainly Holstein type fresh heifers are currently in the £14/1600 area demand is strong as supply is probably below usual levels kiwi cross heifers I would imagine would average around £1000 mark. @Beef farmer will try to convince you they are only worth £5/600 but unlike Turpin he doesn't even have the decency to wear a mask[emoji23]

Go down with tb and 5/600 wont even be mentioned. 425 is my tb price.

High risk selling calved due to chance of TB reactor.
Also kiwi x milkers tend to be block calvers so don't want to be looking for fresh calved animals unless in big numbers. More likely to find a buyer for a group of i/c heifers with a tight calving window

I buy fresh calved from 2/3 sources local markets and a dealer,
But needing to boost numbers a bit right now and considering importing a load of in calf heifers but always bought fresh, how do you select an milking animal when you can see it’s udder

Someone I know just took delivery of 40 German heifers. It took about 6 weeks to get the deal sorted as supply seems to be tightening up.
