Hi

Been checking around forums but cant really seem to find an answer. I have a JD175m and want to mount a 3.8m james pre-ripper on front links with 3.8m 3point link pottenger terra disc on the back. Is there a reason( other than lack of draft control and steering) why nobody seems to do this? The ripper in the photo is 3m mine has two more legs

Cheers Tim

We had this discusion on another thread ,,,rippers are draft use ,,they create traction force on the rear wheels to maintain grip ,,one on the front will dive in and probably rip the front end of the tractor ,you will never control the steering or the traction .

Yeah kind of figured it would do that but after speaking with my local JD rep he said it would be fine but I would have no steering which is fine in straight paddocks

You wouldnt have any weight on the front wheels ,straight fields or not ,7-8 legs even running at plough pan depth is asking for trouble ,,what happen if it hits something ,a big rock,a tree root ,,if the shear bolt in the leg doesnt go ,you risk ripping the top link in half ,the tool folds under the front end and then its time to get the cheque book out to fix the damage

How do you find the tractor handles without draft control? I guess the wheels stop the tractor from diving?
Been about 10 years since I was using it but from what I remember it handled it fine. You sometimes had to lift the linkage a bit to get some weight to steer if the ground was hard. The legs on a flatlift pivot so this probably helped with the steering.

I’d imagine you would want a roller for depth control on front and back of ripper to maintain depth but even then the loads could be huge.id personally never do it for reasons mentioned above.what sort of depth are you thinking of working too.i run a 3m spring tine on front of drilling tractor with combination on the rear but only working 2/3inches deep for levelling and that is a very small load and does not alter tractor steering.with the load you are proposing to push I’d want the front linkage connected to back of tractor to spread the loads.having said all this please post some pictures when it’s going and good luck

In my farmforce day made a front mounted stubble cultivator that worked well and know if someone making a front mounted low disturbance subsoiler and after all there are a few front mounted ploughs about particularly on the continent

I looked into a front mounted ripper as well with a Howard rotary and row furrowers behind. Decided against it basis the stress on the front axle. Pushing not pulling the ripper is harder work too.
Howard in Aus. Made a pre ripper for this model rotary hoe which has a floating hitch for the hoe mounted on the ripper.
I went with this setup ripper, hoe, crumble roller for depth control and row furrowers. Works great and three passes down to one.

Only issue with inline pre rippers is be wary of trash build up.

Never go back to the old way.

If you look on the Agriweld Facebook page you will see what your talking about in operation saw it myself working today and having been fairly sceptical initially was very impressed with how it went.
