Front PTO

Currently got a front linkage on a 30 series JD, but we're wanting to retrofit a front PTO to carry the front mower. Anyone had any clever ways of doing it, our dealer is suggesting a combination linkage and selling the existing linkage on, which seems expensive !.

What make of linkage is currently on the tractor?

Are these belt driven from the engine?
Shaft driven from the front crankshaft, which you can't grease, and the gearbox runs on an egg cup of oil! So either the shaft disintegrates or the top input shaft falls to bits because it doesn't get enough oil and puts fillings through the clutch! All within 5000 hours

Don't get me wrong machines do go wrong...the shafts can fail but it's not a common problem....but Most of the front pto units I have seen fail have been down to not changing the oil and or the filter, running out of or low of oil or even incorrectly installed oil cooler I.E. Upside down  seen plenty of the zuidberg units do 10/15000 hours over the years(y)

Are they not supplied with oil from the tractor? The one on my Massey is it's fed of the oil cooler then there's a pump in the gearbox that sends it back again
The units I've seen are totally seperate and self contained, holding their own oil (about 3 to 4 litres) and having their own little oil filter. I'd say your Massey design with the oil feed from the tractor is not really that common. How old is it?

It's perhaps just because it's a factory fit job then I suppose most tractors now use a zurenburg or simlar linkage and pto rather than there own design

Symon will be able to sort a cooler for you I’m sure.

I’ve one off a 6410 kicking about but I’d be fitting new or near new ideally.
