building a new calf and young stock shed and would save ground works if water trough mounted on gates like this

anyone got experience or better solutions? Budget tight but would love stainless if possible
Thanks

I have done two similar things, one with fixed troughs which the gate swings around. The other with tipping troughs that the gate also swings around. The fixed troughs were off the shelf but the tipping ones I made myself. Will see if I can find some pictures....

have mounted these on a gate with the bit they drink from poking though the bars inside the pen and the rest outside, they work well for cattle and sheep, easy enough to drain out and clean to

No experience of the above, but 100% agree about stainless, galv rusts through eventually, took about 8 years here with tipping troughs.

Problem you have there is thats not actually a gate, its a fixed hurdle, if you need a gate that swings the water pipe is going to cause you bother unless you maybe do it with hydraulic hose. As techwise said might be better with fixed trough with cutout in gate so it swings round

In the OPs pic the water pipe looks a disaster waiting to happen

We put a low 9" block wall with rails above between bedded area/ scrape passage. Then sit a 9" high back water trough on the blocks accesible from the scrape passage.

This is what I am thinking of for a beef shed I am building. Is it ok to just hang it from a gate, hurdle, as long as the pipe is protected.?
On low water pressure how many cattle could that service, 500Kg?

I do think a water trough should be fixed robustly. If a gate or hurdle can get get bumped by cattle it will end up overflowing IMO Will take a pic of our set up tomorrow.

Simple maths. Water requirement of cattle. v gall per hour flow. Remember most of the demand will be in a short period - eg after they have had their corn
In situations with low water pressure a trough is better than a bowl, as it gives a buffer. Other option is to feed bowls from header tank - getting your buffer that way

Have troughs on gates of calf pens here, been 5 years so far with no problems

As promised pic of our prefered method of fixing water troughs between bedded area & scrape passage. Sorry it`s not as clean & shiney as other pics on here. Built this one in 1988 . Water pipe comes up through 9" hollow block so protected from abuse & frost apart from top 6".
