We are considering upgrading our crawler to a slightly newer machine with more power, but second-hand and will be out of warranty.

Indirectly (through family) we have experienced the cost of a transmission failure on a machine with relatively low hours. Does anyone know of any insurance products available to cover such issues on a second-hand machines and their cost?

My family had a transmission failure on 2012 Quadtrac 535. Main dealer repair bill was in the high £30k's! We purchased machine at approx 2500 hours. Used to pay approx £5000 a year for warranty via the Case dealer, it covered the gearbox replacement fully at around 4500 hrs and another £8-10k different repair at approaching 6000hrs. That £5k/year for warranty was money well spent.
With this in mind I did a load of research into these warranties 2-3 years ago. I decided in the end I did not want our business to sell them because I did not have enough confidence that the claims would always be paid. Also more manufacturers were starting to bring out longer warranties i.e 5-8 years around this time.
The warranty that I saw pay out well above was sold by Pecks and I think Does were also offering something similar.
