Just look into the costs involved first.
I’ve never had my own flask but I know the liquid nitrogen top ups ain’t cheap, it would probably depend how much you need to store for how long.
Another thing I’m not sure about but worth checking out, your semen may well be insured in a genus flask

There are plenty of others but depends on whether they operate in your area. I now use Semex but there wasn't as much choice as I would have hoped when I switched away from Genus and I am in a livestock area.

I very much doubt it. Check the T&C s but I'll be very surprised if they are.
I seem to remember Ai man telling me it was, but that might have only been for genus supplied semen.
It’s a good few years since I’ve had any dealings with genus so things might have changed
That or my mind is playing tricks on me or the Ai man was telling porkies, nothing is impossible

Be sure to shop around for flask top ups. Some won't take you on, or charge more, unless you're ordering significant amounts of semen off them. So not good for little beef herds like ourselves, particularly when the companies don't stock the breeds you want 🙈. Heard of several leaving genus after they doubled the price almost over night.
I'm in the process of getting our flask sorted for DIY, any other companies to consider apart from Genus, Cogent or Semex??

Resurrecting an old thread...

I've looked through this part of the forum for comments on the latest price hike from Genus, which came in on Nov. 1st, but haven't found anything on it - which I find astonishing!

In a massive jump the standard payment for an insemination will now be £75... the max number of goes we have per year will not reach 50, and so not being a massive user this is the price I'll have to pay. It's a big jump and is way over inflation.

Our usual Genus AI man is superb; but I have serious doubts that I'm going to continue with Genus now, since at the price of £75, if I have more than one cow to do at a time - absurdly - I can even have a vet out and get them done at a better rate. (Obviously hit rate may vary, but that's true regarding relief AI men too)

A cousin in dairy has told me that the cost increase from Genus isn't as bad, solely down to his numbers, but it's still going up a fair bit. I'm going over o him next week and will be interested to see the actual figures.

Anyone else having serious thoughts about not continuing with Genus?

Perhaps because a lot of us have moved away from Genus ! (admittedly we were flask top ups only anyway but left them 2 years ago, Cogent do it now)... and I was going to post the link to the dairy thread but was beaten to it!

Moving away from Genus next week.
Paying £75 / service, £4 for use of non Genus bull , storage charge £20 / month.

Going with a independent.

I think it most likely we may do so as well, it's simply not viable to keep spending so much. The only downside is not being able to have our usual AI man, he really is very, very good and, of course, it's bloody helpful to have a higher chance of first-service success. I really think Genus are going to lose an awful lot of business and goodwill over this... :(

We have given them another year, as the local team are very good; we tightened our block and bargained hard.

The management clearly don't want the small businesses. Sub-100 services? Either find a local independent, or fix something up with a local DIY dairy farmer.

Good luck.

Yes, we are looking at doing a deal with some people near by, but that may not be a goer; not for any falling out but just on a practical basis. Again, the biggest bugger is the though of losing the service of the AI man, rather than Genus.
