German Covid 19 death rate

One of the things that stands out in the current figures is how the German death rate from Covid 19 is far lower than other countries.

I wondered if this was due to the use of Anti Virals or perhaps a lack of reporting maybe due to control of data or a language barrier.

Perhaps it is how this articles states .. German efficiency in actually testing members of the public at large .. thereby picking up more cases, whereas the UK is not testing the general public.

Not sure how much creedence can be given to some of these figure right now. Every State is carrying out their testing differently now. Frequency and prioritising where to test.

The US figures especially are ropey from my understanding... Testing seems a Lottery.

I know of one instance locally in the UK of an elderly gentleman with what is probably pneumonia and at present, is hanging on. According to a family member, no CV19 test so far after a week, as the hospital seems to consider that they will carry out the same care whatever he has. Seems bizarre, in that he was at a wedding last w/e and I would have thought tracing was worth the effort still....

It's also important to know if the disease mutates .. if the patient isn't tested then how will health professionals ever know and stop the source of another epidemic.

Been using it for a long time to track what's going on .. has good news sources as well.

BUT .. I doubt the cases figures are correct.

My wife is German so our satellite is permanently on the German news. The figures being reported there tarry with the ones on the link above. No idea why they have proportionally fewer deaths, but I guess they are yet to get going properly, or else the health care system is just better able to cope?

Yeah I think the figures will tally for what is reported .. it's just that the figures of actual cases in populations are going to be a lot higher because everyone isn't being tested.

Not wanting to be seen as racist, but the Germans have a reputation for being sticklers for the rules. If they are told not to socialised, perhaps they don't? On the other hand, I am sure we can all think of races who are by nature rebels and don't do as they are told.

That's not a racist thing to say. It's more of a xenophobic stereotype.

Germany has about 24 Intensive Care Units per 100,000 people
UK has about 7
which isn't a problem as long if we keep our infection rate

It would be very interesting to know the age profiles, perhaps the disease in Germany has to date spread more rapidly though a younger, healthier demographic.... Another factor could be if it is spread more thinly across the country, perhaps Italy cases have been more tightly clustered and over whelming local resources... Perhaps many more less sever cases are going undetected in Itatly than in Germany.

Age profile, smoking levels and general health are huge factors in death rates, when in France I notice far more smokers than here and IIRC Italians are heavy smokers too, perhaps the Germans aren't
A really good point.

I was chatting about the subject with my mother earlier - she is a retired nurse who spent the last thirty years of her service at as part of a cardiothoracic team, initially in theatre, ending up as a transplant coordinator. She said that the biggest factor, by a country mile, in lung health and subsequent ability to recover from pretty much any surgery, was whether or not the patient was / had been a smoker or had worked with pollutants giving similar results. No surprise there but...

German consumption of cigarettes seems to be higher than that in both Italy and Spain, but significantly less than in China.

I think it is down to the fact that they are testing people with more serious symptoms.
