Got much drilling to do?

60 acres left about 45 sp barley and 15 sp peas. Going well yesterday on the peas until the heavens opened and rained us off. Fields are very wet underneath not enjoying drilling these last few acres.
The one field left is heavily infested with bg have had 2 very good kills on stale seed beds since harvest but should we drill it?
The Sp barley doesn't seem to have come quite as well and have the vigour where the patches of bg have been in other fields even though they have been sprayed off for two or three weeks, plus this is heavy clay.

Very happy with combi to press, as ever, theres odd elements that could be better - like the roll over sheet thats a reasonable enough design, but any clart stuck to the top can finish up in the tank when you unroll it, and I far prefer screw adjusters to messing on with pins and holes on the clod board, but fundamentally its great. Dealer support very good too.
Some of our cultivation kit can be a bit nettle bed, but you are dead right, it gives options in delicate going - the oats would still be in the bag if we hadn't been able to scruff it up with the ddrive first, just a shame it was too tacky to roll. Got pre em to go on barley, so this rain can do one!!
I'm sorry I've not been paying attention, which combi did you buy please? Ta

One and a bit fields of linseed sown yesterday before rain stopped play. -1 oC last night! Heavy rain due tonight & tomorrow on the south coast so unlkiely to get many more acres done this week. Next week's forecast is ok so will complete the job then, much as I dislike sowing this late I've few other options. Glad I opted for the higher seed rate.

its not late for linseed at all, I have waited until this week and still not totally sure we have gone too soon - i think we are earlier this year than we have been the last 3 with it and it's done well in all those years

its cold

I agree that it needs to go in warm but my concern now is that it goes in dry & isn't big enough to put roots down if it stays dry. Tillage differs from no till here - soil moisture conservation is important but guaranteed for you.

its true I guess, thinking back to pre no-till days lack of moisture post drilling was a big concern - its only notill that has made spring cropping possible on my soils

May can be baking hot - I spent many a year making silage with the aircon full on. To chit then run out of moisture is my biggest fear sowing this late. I really don't believe that we will have frosts every week until harvest.

Given your annual rainfall, is there really much risk of ground drying out enough for a crop failure?

Bound to be some passing showers every now and again, even in a dry spell.

Got finished on linseed yesterday

All spring crops have gone into lovely conditions mostly after covers

It's cold still though !

Any pics? Did you spray off the covers pre drilling? Assume 750a? Any starter fert? What were the covers?

The first spring crop here sown was spring beans direct drilled into a sprayed off mustard & oats cover. It is a kind field, but has been easily the best established crop this spring. 3" of rain since hasn't helped though!!

i didn't take any pics of linseed going in got a video of peaola drilling though which is pretty much the same - will get a few when i'm passing

cover was radish, sunflower, linseed, peas, beans and millet - 50% grazed by sheep

the last 50ac done yesterday afternoon was straight into stubble - interestingly the straight into stubble was wetter going

Unless you are in the extreme corners of the UK or have a crop that likes later drilling maize, Linseed etc, I declare the spring drilling season formerly closed as today is the 1st of May and I hope you don't have much to do! If its cereals or pulses I reckon fallow is now the best option.

why? its but a date, if we have a summer like 76 any spring crop will be poor if we have a long cool one with just the right amount or rain then mid may could be a great crop, especially if we have the now normal august which buggers the winter wheat quality and may drilled sb comes of dry and malting quality, hindsight will see what was right
