Gov buying farm's

Was it comp purchase ?

Stopping it being a farm probably ticks the right “nutrient reduction” boxes allowing them to build more houses without issues.

My first thought. Biodiversity Net Gain and boxes ticked = more food producing land built on.
This country really has gone .... can't think of a word which will escape the filter.

it's not all bad.
BNG managed land will often need livestock in the system to achieve the net gains desired. A former dairy unit, presumably with a maize acreage, could offer a cracking opportunity for a sensible livestock enterprise to be established that could be under-written by BNG security.

What would/could be a radical move would be if the Wildlife Trust then create farm tenancies for new entrants and then for them to pick up where council smallholdings have left off.
Would need to proceed with caution but I think it could be a serious first rung on the ladder at very low risk to everyone.

That would be the sensible option but instead they will pay someone to top it twice a year releasing all that CO2
