Got thinking the other day when cleaning out grainstores a mixture of grain and rape etc . Now instead of just tipping it out now . I save some in old 40 gallon drums as it makes excellent wild bird feed in the winter when the birds really need it .
The bird feeders in the garden just get rape/ wheat all I have to buy is peanuts and cut maize to mix in and fat balls .
The cleanings from a store do make for good wild duck food as well

Usually we have been just tipping them out as we clean the stores around the hedges on in the wood but most of it just rots as too much for them to eat before it goes mouldy . So thought little and often will benefit the birdies when they most need it .

I feed the sweepings and tailings from the seed dresser on the main track up through the farm over winter. Put out about 20kg every other day as I go along on the quad bike. Surprising how many birds make use of it!

The average house puts out 20grams a day for wild birds and still farmers are the bad guys

Yep, let alone all the other feed we supply for the wild life right through the year, just watch finches feeding on the top pods of rape as it ripens!

My grandmother used to bag it all up and feed the hens, chickens, ducks etc all winter with it! Remember even going with her to bag sone up at other peoples grain lofts when we stopped the whole palava of growing and harvesting grain on rocks and boulder fields!!! PP is much easier!!

Save it up for feeding here. Mix it in with our feed mix and then the song birds have plenty to go at instead of just whole wheat. We save the ‘chipped wheat’ from the cleaner too. Everything loves that; it must be more palatable.
