Gravity drainage

Is it becoming evident that land which has to rely on gravity river systems for drainage are been used as the scape goat to hide the EA s failure to understand their importance for land owners livelihood and that the land is simply not there for free water storage due to EA neglect.

I think most people were happy in the 70/80/90s with the river’s authorities
so since then acres of farmed land has reduced, acres of farmed land has been put into so called schemes to prevent run off or slow it down
thousands of acres have disappeared under houses/ind estates and roads
yet the farmer still gets blamed for flooding
when will the penny drop to the government that the ea are useless at their job

We have about 70 acres of low land that we pay drainage board rates on. Almost permanently under water these days as the river that they drain into is silted up in the bottom such that its level has to rise a meter before it flows full width. A meter rise in the water level means my water cannot get away.
Nobody is responsible any more. The drainage board has merged with others such that you cannot get anything done. Committee now has too many non farming bods on it.

I still get charged the rates but it seems i now pay for the priviledge of having my land used as somebody else's flood plain

That sounds like our lot,it’s like trying to talk to MI5 ,some farmers don’t care because I’m ok so sod you lot,the rest are members who quite frankly I wonder if they have any idea about the actual drainage and how it works. We need action because like you paying drainage to flood while subsidies on pumped land is now getting beyond a joke.Out of interest Pm me which board you pay .

We have very good relations with our IDB and they do a good job. It still has a majority on the Board that are actual farmers. Why not get yourself on the Board.
Talk to the Chairman and you may find they are very keen to have more farmers on, but none are prepared to give up the time to attend meetings. It is unusual for the Chairman not to be a farmer.
