Sorry lads forgot to post back but its nothing to do with the vacuum system so i was on with the man who rebuilt the engine and he has taken it back and is going to check it over again at his own expense
Apologies for reviving an old thread - but hooding someone can help out.
My old TEF has been sitting a while and went to start it - wound over for a while and then fired but then revs up quite hard and hand throttle makes no different to revs. The stop control in or out makes no different and the tractor has to be stalled or block the air intake.
Any ideas please? Wondering if rack is seized or the diaphragm?
stop works on the rack, if it moves, then so must the rack, provided nothing has broken, Engine could be running on sump oil, check the oil level, lift pump could have allowed fuel in to contaminate oil, and raise the level.
Doesn’t it (the non Perkins engine) use inlet manifold suction for govering? We had one race away because the pipe wasn’t connected. Air leaking in/ diaphragm gone? When ours raced away the only way to stop it was loosening injector pipes. Could have been a disaster.
Check diaphram, that causes them to race away but the stop should work, seeing as it doesnt would point to the rack being stuck, take the side cover off the injector pump (the two screws) and see if it's moving when you pull the stop. They are fairly simple once you know how they work.
The rack could well be stuck but I seem to remember the stop control seemed ineffective when ours raced away due to the governor control suction pipe being off the inlet manifold. I am sure we’d have tried the stop control before resorting to loosening injectors to stop it but it was about 30 years ago. Does the stop control pull the rack via a spring? There is also a butterfly valve in the inlet manifold to vary the vacuum if my memory serves me correctly. Can’t remember what it contributed but is it also present and correct?
