Guy Smith's response to FW article on AIC rules.

I feel for Guy. The RT Crops Chair has truly been a poisoned chalice for him.
The question is would he earn more respect by resigning now OR can he really make a difference in making the much needed radical changes that the sector is demanding.
Needs some change at the top, Mosley is not the right man to engage with farming members ……..

Why do you feel for him?

I don't know anything about cereals but I would say that I'm level with Guy Smith according to his response.

How does RT 'take the rap' for government action and supply chain requirements. I think that is a lie OR an honest admission as to who they work for.

He then contradicts himself saying that different supply chains have different approaches but that RT should have to be at the most exacting standards. Completely overlooking the substance of farmers dissatisfaction.

I felt he was a great candidate for President of the NFU but his current form is pisspoor.

he’s not there to make a difference. He’s there for the salary like they all are

let’s not be so naive, replacments would be just the same

It's my soft nature ;)

But soft about what? This fundamentals of the argument against RT are still not personal towards anyone. Guy has been put there for the RT brand not for farmers even though farmers fund it.

I dont like seeing anyone public insulted (Blenky did insult a lot of farmers though) and I think it's a shame when you get it but the fundamentals of the pro RT position is arrogant and that is why so many are reacting in the way they do. Guy is taking a lot of arrows for sure, he must really love Red Tractor because there is nothing else good to say about the whole unedifying row.

It's really sad in the great scheme of things - farmers having to fight and leave their own union and representatives and debate legal action to be afforded market access away from pet projects of those to claim to want to look after their interests.

His reply was disgraceful, nobody said anything about neonics, but he had to ramble on about it. I have lost all respect him.

Trouble is for any of the red tractor staff if they did a u turn and agree that the job was a complete dogs dinner and wanted binning they could no longer represent the firm that pays there wages.

pretty much the same as a JD rep rocking up and telling the farmer his product was crap and he should buy a Fendt instead.

So really Messers Mosley, smith and the rest of them either have to continue banging the drum or hand there notice in!

Yep. There's no middle ground or room for wishy washy agreements with any of that lot.

they wont go tho their egos are too large and they are heavily addicted to gravy.
Gravy will soon be bland watery auld stuff that’s not worth bothering with!

End of the day rt AIC NFU AHDB all know there is a big backlash happening and there defence is non existent. They may well have some cats they can pull out of the bag but so far all they have managed is a bit of amateurish deflection tactics.

Oh it affects me, I am subscribed to two of the RT protection rackets. How about you?
yes it effected the small arable that i do /did financially relatively greatly. money that we couldnt afford not to have. I wont go into any more detail than that.

but surely cant have troubled you much if you can afford sports cars ? not that i have any knowledge of that in reality just from what you have posted on here anyway.

some Peoples livelihoods / their ability to pay bills are at stake, especially as the subsidy tapers off ... why shouldn't that arouse very keen concern to put it mildly ?

My apologies, my poor attempt at sarcasm flew over your head. I doubt many that know me would say I had a “soft nature” 🤣🤣
Guy is a performing a role which he chose to apply for and accept when offered the position.
I have known Guy personally for many years. We are not always on the “same page” and most certainly not when it comes to RT.
Much is made on here about “the gravy train”. I very much doubt, at the remuneration level offered for the role, that Guy is doing it just for the money.

Can you understand his waffled response in today's Farmers Weekly ?
I can't, I used to think he was a good spokesman for agriculture, now I have lost all respect, he couldn't answer a simple question.

It’s true I do have sports cars, so what? I also resent paying unnecessary “protection money” for RT but if the business was at risk of failure because of the additional RT costs imposed upon it I think I would have more serious and radical problems that needed to be addressed.
You are correct that the impact of the tapering BPS payment will have significant impact on farm profitability and farm structure, particularly in the SW. I would agree that in such a scenario it brings us closer to the RT imposed costs being the straw that broke the Camels back.

Agree that it was not a straightforward reply. But Guy is having to defend the RT position, that is his job and what he is being paid for. I don’t know but I would imagine that his reply probably went through RT Comms team first.
