Need to get in to replace a handbrake sensor on a 6420 John Deere, the sensor which sets off the buzzer if you try driving with handbrake pulled up.

How do I remove panelling surrounding it, can't see any screws

Now Then..
Take the trim panel off the LH corner post..
As screw in from the back and the plastic trim screw/cap, also the window gas ram bolt..
Did as you have described easy peasy, 'Its not much use however, the plastic cab trim restricting acces to the sensor is not that piece of trim its another piece down around the hand break hinge point.

The piece I think I need to remove is around hand brake hinge and sweep down to the floor, and half way around the back of the seat. Does that sound correct

Ahhhhh, I see the bit you mean... I don't think I've ever had that out.... Take a look a JDParts, see what holds it in.
I did one on a 6920 a month ago, without removing any more trim...

On the 30series cab the handbrake lever bracket is fastened to the cab frame by two 13mm headed m8 x 16 bolts, the bottom one is slotted so just loosen it. Imagine the 20series be the same.

They are both awkward as hell to access without some creative socketry

Mine are allen heads on 20series. and should be ok on creative socketry. Should there be a bit of slack on the cable to pull it into the cab to work on it to change the switch.

Managed to change it this evening held in by regular Phillips head screws. Something like m4 thread.

Needle nose pliers and regular pliers I managed to turn screw heads without removing panels.

Loosen both screws and then remove top screw only. Can then jiggle out sensor and jiggle in new one. Definitely would be easier if they were regular hex head bolts

Changed the sensor and it is operating in reverse - handbrake down light comes on and beeping starts.

Reversed the wires on the connector and still doing the same. And yes I tried plugging in the pins directly into the wiring harness to take bad connection out of the puzzle and it still operates in reverse.

I am rather surprised

Any ideas

Blue and purple wires on the old one, blue and black on the new one

Wrong switch, simple as that.

Have you used AL114955 ??
I'd call it a switch rather than a sensor. It's just a simple microswitch in a plastic housing with a spring steel actuating lever...
Exactly which is why I'm surprised it only operates in reverse and doesn't change functionality when I swap the wires around

if there are only 2 wires, you can swap them all day. It won’t reverse the function of the switch. With a two wire switch, you can have either normally open or normally closed. Seems you have the wrong type of switch
