Harvest 2013 - big thumbs up - what next?

Congratulations to the folks at the BBC behind Harvest 2013.

The pace and content of the first two programmes aired made for compelling viewing for folks familiar with modern agriculture and from my non-farming mates alike.

Wouldn't it be great to have more of these concise, factual and well made programmes in the future covering different facets of modern agriculture

What ideas do other peeps feel would make good viewing for the general public and farming enthusiasts alike?

Please don't let this thread develop in to discussions about presenters or other matters, let's just see what we can suggest and - if broadcasters are looking in - it might just happen!

I'll kick off by suggesting a three programme documentary series in to technology in food production:

Robotic milking
Dry sow feeders
Sexed semen
Satellite technology in farm machines
Anaerobic digesters
EID in sheep
EBV and livestock recording

That tomato place in Thanet shows how impressive technology can be as a televisual medium

Over to you

My ideas would be to run on from this weeks programmes, mention was made in both programmes of stock feed, so it could continue along this vein following the grain, veg, fruit through to livestock feed. Follow the grain into a feed mill.
From grass seed breeding through to grass growth, on to through to silage, hay, and again feed.

A programme on conservation agriculture would be great - so much interesting stuff could be shown. I think most have no idea how much technology is used in arable farming and how precise it has become

Our kids childminder was just saying she had no idea there was so much technology in farming when I dropped them off for school this morning. Not seen the programmes yet myself but she was raving about them.

Phillipa Forrester would be the person to front a conservation agriculture programme too. Avid environmentalist and did a part time degree in ecology and conservation according to Wikipedia.

I think a BBC programme should be made about a small ex dairy unit, who runs the HLS scheme and does everything he can to encourage wildlife on his farm!
Preferably one who is just in the process of converting buildings to pig pens too!

Would make fascinating viewing! ;)
@BBCFarmingProgrammeMaker consider it done! ;)

I'm not sure, I think an ex-dairy farm with buildings converted to pig pens AND a free range poultry unit would be even better! :)

can we leave out EID until it actually works properly

think they should do more for livestock farms. especially large dairies and mixed farms

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.

This webinar will be...
