Hedge Cutting Fuel Per Hour

Do you set your PTO revs via the cruise controller? They seam to be lighter on fuel if you do
Yes, you can get it down to 6 litres/hour in 1000 speed but the gears aren't great at those revs, A range too slow, B is too fast. Don't know whether it's a characteristic of the engine or what

Litres an hour is bollox when you're paying , litres a mile it should be.
But you could be cutting a small hedge, a header width across the top and 1 breed of grass, the start cutting a gutter that's 3 breeds on each bank with 4 breeds on the side of the hedge!

If you do have a 200 hp tractor, then you might as well shove a big tele vfr with 6ft head on it, not so handy in the tight places, but your reach and output will make up for it, but then again, can your work justify a £35k hedgecutter?
Maybe I'm missing something but I really don't understand this big tractor big hedgecutter (6ft head) when it's a job that's charged by the hour, who is actually gaining, I certainly wouldn't be spending £35k on a hedgecutter, or is it just boys with shiny toys again.

Me neither, but if you've 200 hp and the work to justify one, then that would be set up for you. The old belt driven twose wouldn't reach past the back tyre of a 200hp monster.

Il admit to being in the gang of 200hp on a hedger
I ran a jd6820 and replaced a 6.5metre machine with a 8 metre machine, as there's lots of large ditches in this area. It also came down to a very good machine at the right condition and price.
I then replaced the jd with a 200hp nh that could also pull the big square baler.
It's big but holds the hedger very steady with plenty of reach, I would say it depreciates just as much as a 140hp machine and uses the same amount of fuel. Also it has to pull a 4x3 baler

Fair enough, but your probably earning about the same amount per hour as the set up in my avatar, ok obviously more reach etc

In some ways it's a lot better hedgetrimming on a smaller tractor you can get away with, visibility in tight lanes & roads is far better. I used to have a NH t6080 on a trimmer and you couldn't see jack s### from the seat in a lane.

I used to know of a Turner 25S being run on a Case 856xl. It was actually quite a nice setup. The Turner was swapped for a Bomford 81-81 which was a bit heavy leaving her light on the back side at full reach but just useable. The tractor was swapped for a 140hp Massey to improve stability and they found that they couldn't get into half the places they needed anymore st the setup was too wide :banghead:
