What's the optimum PTO speed for flail hedgecutter. Some people have advised me to run it no more than 440rpm
Seems to be a lot of different thoughts on this

What does the instruction book say? My Shelbourne Reynolds says run at 540 rpm so that's what we do.

I dont see any problem running the head at the rated speed, but I do run in 1000 or economy to achieve the required pto speed at lower engine revs. I would think there are issues with running the rotor too slow and hitting something hard - lower shaft speed would mean higher torque loadings in the event of a sudden deceleration?

Lower shaft speed = poorer cutting. Higher shaft speed = more kinetic energy when it hits an immovable object.

My twose has a 540 shaft but recommends only running 450 on normal work and saving 540 for tough work. I tend to use it at around 480

I've always run the hedgecutter at about 530rpm, not sure why people say different. Get a better finish when run at correct rpm

My McConnell runs at 500 rpm run the tractor on 750 pto then enough power for reversing at speed without over revving the shaft.

McConnell here too which says to run at 500rpm I usually run it in 1000 pto or if it’s harder going 540e

My McConnell states 750 rpm on a 6 spline shaft, so it will depend on the make and model that you have.

My Shelbourne Reynolds says 540 Rpm on the side and I run the tractor speed depending on the hedge but it's normally between 0.5 - 1 KPH (Case puma CVX)
