Hi. Never posted before, but was curious what people would suggest for a greyface dartmore lamb , really sticky poo... and has completely fused bum shut. Is this a common thing? All the wool has matted together. Obviously have bathed and trimmed, but should they be being Clipped on arrival? There so hairy.
Appreciate any help.

the lamb is 4 days old now. Making a really bad crying sound whilst trying to go. I've pulled the tail away and it still can't go properly. There just to wooly everything is matting together

Bathing every morning and night, I was just curious to see what other people do. He's fine in every other aspect really apart from this.

Yes....sit it in warm water and gently clean it off. I would try tubing the lamb with some natural yoghurt - helps things get moving and takes any infection away.

Op has already stated that she's pulled tale away and bathed and that the bum is still fused shut????

Where has op said she's pulled tale off the arse?

The tail has come away now from it. However there is still a really nasty peice keeping the bum open constantly. I think now it's a case of either keep it infection free or rip his skin. It's awful! No wonder there "rare breeds"

Where she said she bathed and trimmed the lamb surely? Where else would she be bathing or trimming the lamb only around its tail?

Any way I don't want to be starting arguments so if you think I'm wrong fine but a four day old lamb with a fused bum making noises when trying to go to the toilet needs warm soapy water put up its rear end IMO only my opinion though.

To stop it happening in any more you have, as soon as they've passed the meconium (the first 'black' sh!t that they have after they've had their first belly full of colostrum) wipe a finger full of petroleum jelly under the tail and over the @rse.
We have Lincolns here and they can have the same problem. It's caused by the ewes having very rich milk (especially as they're getting hard feed at this time of year) and the breed being a bit wooly

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.
