Holiday in Canada

Planning on going to Canada this summer for 2-3 weeks on holiday. original plan was to fly to Vancouver, spend a few days on Vancouver Island and then head to the Rockies.

Now considering dropping the Vancouver region to save money and just flying in and out of Calgary and doing the Rockies.

What are people's thoughts and what does everybody recommend?

Cheers

if you like farm machinery then the farm progress show is on in Regina mid june. You have to like driving though. I last went in 2015, did over 2000k in the 2wks we were there.

Not a tonne going on Mid June. Still liable to be hitting seeding though if you're interested in seeing that in action.

Stampede in Calgary is July 7 - 16

Westerner Days in Red Deer is usually a week after Stampede.

You can find a variety of small town rodeos going on in June.

Banff, Lake Louise, Jasper are all gorgeous that time of year (or any time really) with a variety of touristy things to do. Hikes, horseback trips, gondola's, etc.

Farm Progress super4 mentioned is June 21-23 in Regina.

If you're just sticking around Calgary places you can go would be Drumheller with the Tyrell Museum, Head Smashed in Buffalo Jump by Fort Macleod, anything in Banff, Canmore, Kananaskis or even Waterton. Within Calgary would be the Zoo, Telus Spark Centre, Heritage Park, Callaway Park if you've got kids.

I'll probably remember some other things eventually.

Anything in specific you're thinking about or interested in seeing?

I once made the mistake of driving my parents from Brandon, Manitoba to Banff...2 people who dread the prospect of the 2.5 hour drive from Leicester to Norfolk for the weekend.

My old man took photos of every grain elevator we passed for the first hour....he looked decidedly miserable for the remaining 11 hours. Happy memories!

I've flown to Calgary , and the driven from Calgary to Vancouver down the Okanagan (sp ?0 Valley twice but as has been said above , DON'T underestimate the distances ! We really don't have anything like the distances in this country . Many Canadians/ Americans think nothing of driving 1,00 miles , and in some Northern areas you would get visual indigestion - nothing but pine trees - mile after mile after mile . Try not to miss the stampede if at all possible , it is not to be missed , and also try to see the railheads and auction site there , if you like big American cattle trucks you'll see them lined up , 20 at a time . I've also taken the Rocky Mountaineer to Vancouver , and that's good too . If you do go there , try not to miss Gastown , with it's steam clock , and also the Victoria Park with native Innuit totem pole makers working . They also have rather attractive squirrel- like creatures ( chipmunks ?) there , nice to watch . All depends on how much time you have but if you can , start off at the Cruise liner buildings and go down Granville Street - it starts off with rather posh shops and deteriorates quietly to the sort of shops with all kinds of unmentionable things for sale , things I would hesitate to even enquire about . You could also buy a bong pipe from roadside "tray " sellers , (and the wherewithall to put in them too . At the bridge there , is the Granville Street Market , if it's eatable , they sell it there - good quality too , with street performers for entertainment . Need time again , but up the Fraser river , they have a wild salmon establishment with underwater windows to watch the salmon going up the salmon steps to spawn . They catch some "ripe" ones and milk them for their eggs and milt , rearing the fry up to releasing age before freeing them into the river . Whilst going up the Fraser Valley there are some beautiful farmsteads , most of which are so well maintained and show the original Dutch settlers influence withe double pitch roofs . And I haven't even touched on Banff and the Rockies ! You might think from the above that I rather like Canada- you'd be right too , I love it !
