Horsch sprinter osr

I have got a 4 mtr horsch sprinter drill which has Dutch industries 1 inch coulter points , I have been thinking of direct drilling osr with it but running the tines at around 5 inches and pulling the pipe off the coulter to just broadcast the seed on behind the tines, has anyone tried this ?

We tried something similar with home made coulters with tube behind the horsch point. I think the reason we didn't continue was indifferent depth control of seed and struggle to pull it deep enough to make a difference then due to size of tractor. Point was too wide as I remember so too much disturbance. Used 1" Dutch for last 5 years.

Yes we do. Perhaps go a little deeper to try to negate lack of individual coulter depth control and in search of moisture if dry(not this year!).
Also provides a bit more soil to cover seed. It has been pretty successful and tine certainly pushes straw out of the way.
In a dry year chopped straw is good at retaining moisture, but in a wet one we feel slugs and toxins are worse with straw present.

Thanks for that , we are going to try running a carrier type disc in front of the drill to give us a bit of tilt then run the drill tines at about 4 inches then broadcast the seed behind

Why not just drill at 10mm or so direct - that how we have established our osr for several years with a converted CO and works well

If you cultivate you will increase the weed burden in crop

I am going to try a couple bits direct into the stubble , do you find drilling direct you get good reliable establishment

Our contractor established all our OSR for the first time with a Horsch and 1 inch Dutch Openers last autumn and it did a fantastic job I was very impressed, had previosuly used a Claydon which also did a good job but with a lot more soil being moved.

Personally I would run them about an inch deep and try that. If you are worried about wheelings try a low disturbance subsoiler in front of drill, that’s what I do then go in with my simba freeflow which has a coulter conversion. I take the wings off and just leave the points on which are the same as a Horsch co. [emoji1303]

But my old CO was probably one of the first. If it wasn't because of the lack of tine pressure it would still be here.
