How do i test a flow meter?

Wires are 12v, 0v and signal.

If I connect it to live and earth, should the signal wire show voltage as water passes, is that how it works?

I think they produce pulses, which correspond to a certain volume. Ideally need a 'scope, but some controllers have a diagnostic mode that can monitor the raw feed.

Wanted to check wires at a point where sensor wires join sprayer wires to rule out either wiring or sensor problems.
