How many collars/peds for heat detection?

Should see my pile of dead herdinsights collars, absolute joke of a company now
This is my worry about a heat detection system. I use an independent scan man to PD cows and he sees a lot of herds around the country. He's always telling me to stick with our current way of walking and chalking, as he sees so many that have been taken out after a few years and wouldnt currently rest his hat on any, bar the system that lely run.

Couldn't agree more, I think the ear tag system sounds good but I wouldn't bother with another collar system, may seem good while a grant is on but they need replacing at some point, usually a lot sooner than the salesman tells you and it's an expensive circle

Do you not think your scanner man has a vested interest. If the system works he is no longer needed.

Not that I'm aware of. I think the issue is that should you be unlucky enough to be checked they can't exactly see how many you have. At least collars , peds and tags are visible so if they want to check exactly how many you have they can.
Bugger, I liked the idea of the calving detection, probably going to apply for a cowmanager system then

Why don't you rent it instead of buy?
Bit more expensive over the life of the system...5 years but,
Goes wrong their problem, easy on cash flow and get all the upgrades.
Never looked into it, who does that? I like the cowmanager system because it's cheap in comparison to pedometers/collars which nearly gave me a heart attack when I first inquired!

Cow Manager (I believe) and Nedap can be rented. You can turn modules on and off as you please. So if you've finished serving just turn your heat detection module off and save some money

Don't think cm turning on and off is an option anymore it was 6 on 6 off. But I do think you can push for a block Calver discount.

I have put on here before that we use cowmanager ear tags. Good enough that a scanner man would be redundant unless you really needed to know about twins.

Not counting the initial cost of the tags it costs under £13 per year to monitor heat (rumination still shows up on the graph but no alerts), at that price it isn't worth shifting tags so we do all the cows.

What I have found useful is the window of time in which you have got to ai.

Why is there a monthly fee with these systems???
The monthly fee ones usually equal the price of the outright purchase ones at around about 5-6 years which is when a percentage battery one's will start to die (might just be sales pitch as I haven't used anything else). So long term you might be better off leasing. Smaxtec is a bit different as you might struggle to get the bolus back.

Why anybody would even entertain a new collar system now is beyond me, so expensive when the technology has clearly been made compact enough to fit in a tag. If you’re going block calving you’ll need 190+ tags they’re under £30 a piece so less than £6k. 190 collars is bound to be tapping on for £20k now?
