How Old Are Your Trailer Tyres?

Took my spare ivor williams trailer tyre,( the small ones) to my local tyre company, to see about replacing it, i was planning on making a long journey with my ivor williams tri axle flat trailer to pick something up? Any way, learnt something new, apparently according to the tyre man, tyres fitted to caravans and trailers must not exceed being more than 7 years old? Well i asked him how old this tyre was, from the date code on the tyre he could tell, that the tyre was made in 2008? Ive had the trailer from new, so it means all 7 tyres are illegal, out of date? So that scuppered that journey, and learnrt a new regulation? it makes sense in a way because short journeys the tyres will probabley last? but on a long trip on a motorway at reasonable speed the tyres will heat and come apart? Nightmare seniario?

I’d say the tyre man is lifting your leg,the law is on steered axles on hgv’s and buses and it’s 10 years old not 7.

It should go without saying that tyres which are damaged or worn to the legal minimum tread depth must be replaced immediately. Caravan tyres need regular replacement, irrespective of their visual appearance. We recommend that you replace your caravan tyres when they reach five years old and should never be used when more than seven years old.

Bit like the adverts saying “we recommend changing your mattress at 8 years old” a mattres seller telling you this.

It does appear that the tyres must now be date stamped on a trailer of over 3.5 tonne gross. But no requirement to replace at 7 or 10 years. :scratchhead:

does anyone know the law on here then ? because he said that it was illegal to have tyres exceeding more than 7 years old on caravans and towed trailers such as the ivor williams cattle, or flat bed trailers ?

Relying on the GOV website, which I assume is the whole truth there's no mention of trailers of any kind.

Having said that, a few years ago I had a car with tyres 7 years old and was told after an MOT 'I can pass it this year, but next year all the tyres will need replacing because of their age', I didn't bother about it because I had plans to move it on before then.

They can only fail it on tread depth,I’ve had the side walls cracked on my pick up tyres for the last 5 years and it still passes. They are 13year old BF Goodrich.

The Avon tyres on ifors used to be self regulating,, ie, the treads used to come off or they burst anyway.
I was gonna say that.I wouldn’t want to be doing a long journey with old Ifor tyres anyway for my own peace of mind. Those tyres are crap, you can’t even buy a well known make now, they are cheap enough tho

I don’t think that it’s a regulation, but more of an advisory recommendation. But I suspect that if a tyre blew on the motorway causing an accident the boys in blue would be closely looking at the the damaged tyre carcass.
